Mediacom

I've been considering switching back to DirectTV from Mediacom for a while. This might be what it takes.

Can anybody tell me how much similar programming would be for DirectTV. Not the promos which is about all they'll tell you. But what the actual cost is down the road.

We have Digital Cable. Pretty much all the channels except a bunch of the sport ones. All the HBO's, Showtime, Cinemax and Starz channels. Additionally we have the OnDemand services that come with the premium channels. I don't mean Pay-per-View, but the free viewing of HBO or showtime programs, movies, etc. I've heard that isn't available with DirectTV - and my wife loves that service.

We also have MediaCom internet service which I absolute love. My father-in-law has Qwest DSL and there's no real comparison. And we have a single DVR that's a must. I'd like two, but Mediacom only allows one.

All together, our bill runs just over $150/month. Assuming that I keep the internet at $50ish, can DirectTV compare price wise for the same programming?

Anybody have just MediaCom internet service. I thought somebody here had Direct or Dish, but Mediacom basic cable and internet. I think the basic cable also granted you MediaCom 22 which has ISU replays and some of the games.

Well I just got done talking to Mediacom and they wouldn't budge...they wouldn't remove the installation fee or lower my rate. I bitched quite a bit too. But they were willing to give me $15 off per month to switch to 256k internet...woo hoo, stop the presses with that deal. :rolleyes5cz:
I took advantage of the $150 from Sinclair from switching to DirecTV. Now it's on to finding an alternate internet source. Next call is to Qwest.
 
Thanks for the tip about the 20% discount and free rabbit ears! I just called them, mentioned I was close to switching providers, mentioned that promotion (I live in Oskaloosa) and they said that ok, they'd do that if it would keep my business.
 
I just switched to Dish a couple of days ago, chose them over Direct because they have about 20 more HD channels in their lineup and they don't require you to purchase the HD antenna in order to be able to get your locals in HD. Their system is strong enough for you to get the locals in HD without the Antenna.
 
I have internet and basic cable with mediacom for $65.22 a month. The cost for internet alone is I believe $55.00 plus taxes. I also have dish network. The cost for the locals through DISH the last time I checked was around $12.00. So at the time it made more sense to get the discount for the internet and retain basic cable (channel 22 is included with basic). I like the intenet speed and when the weather gets bad I can still get the locals with mediacom.

Where do you live for this to happen? DSM locals on HD through Dish?

It's not broadcast in HD all the time, just like Mediacom or directv, but they do allow you to get locals in HD when they are broadcast in HD without the antenna. Whereas you have to have the antenna with Direct.
 
What are the taxes and fees a month for Direct? Has anyone gotten Diirect tv through Qwest for the internet? What is the speed of Qwest's internet compared to broadband. thanks
Weve had terrible service and reception with Mediacom ever since we moved into aour new house in Ankeny, and that was over a year and half ago. I hate to go to a slower internet, but i guess slower is better than only working now and then.
Weve bitched alot and gotten stuff for free, but it seems like its always something new thats going wrong.
 
The best way to get local HDTV is with rabbit ears. And it's free! nm

That is the single biggest misunderstanding about HDTV.

Now, if you want your ESPN in HD, you're going to have to pay up.

the best quality HD is over the air and it is free (locals of course), period. Read any journals or forums about HD and you will soon see that it is, by far, the best.

I just got off the phone with Qwest. If you bundle Qwest Internet with DirecTV (you don't need to sign up for Directv through Qwest to get it), you save $5 per month...if you have additional Qwest services (phone, cell phone), you save even more.

Qwest's speed is 1.5MB/download (can get up to 7MB) and 256k upload. Mediacom's upload is also 256k but has a higher download speed.

I'm so pissed off at Mediacom, I no longer care if it's a little slower with Qwest.

Unless you're a gaming geek, would you even notice the difference between 1.5 down & 8 down, which is the minimum download speed from Mediascam?

I currently have mediacom only b/c of the locals in HD. My TV is HD Ready ( I love FB in HD.) If I ditch Mediacom and go to DirecTv HD, can I pull in the local HD signals in DSM with just the antenna or do I need some type of decoder box to go along with it?

I was always under the impression I needed to buy a decoder box (for $300-$500) to receive the OTA HD broadcast? If this isn't the case I'll drop mediacom today and go with DirecTV.

Directv and Dish will give you the HD box for free. Dish also has about 20 more channels in HD than direct does for the same price, which is why i chose dish.
 
HD ready might not mean you can support an antenna feed directly to your TV for HD-OTA. It has to have an HD chip in it (check the manual or manufacturers website for support). But Fatsow is correct, the antenna feed can go directly into your DTV or Dish receiver and receive HD programming for free OTA. However, you will not have any program information on the channel guide unless you subscribe to locals from the sat provider (~$5,99)

I just got the 20% discount, its on all services and rentals so just 20% off the entire bill for four months.

For CR/Marion/Hiawatha residents call (319) 395-7801 - its a service center in RedOak, they were able to help me - I'm hearing the 800 number acts like they've never heard of it before.
 
Had this discussion a few months ago, learned a lot about HD (because everything I thought was wrong).

Where I live in LA, we have Time Warner Cable or Comcast. Unfortunately, Time Warner does not carry the NFL Network (I'm not sure about Comcast). A lot of people are bailing to Satelite so they can get the channel.

Here is the difference I see between the two Satelite Providers.


Direct TV - You can buy the NFL Package (Direct TV owns the sole rights on this) and get every game on Sunday however the channel guide is pretty slow.
Dish Network - More HD Channels (Which I only watch one or two of them.) However the channel guide is much faster (at least on the HD DVR receiver) and more user friendly than the Direct TV one (Once again, I'm comparing the two HD DVR receivers against each other). I believe Dish has more music channels than Direct TV also because they work with Sirius Satelite Radio.

It all depends upon what you want your satelite to have, the costs are relatively the same and they almost have all the same channels. As far as getting them to come out and set you up. Here in LA you can have it done in less than 24 hours. I switched to Dish when I moved because I told them I would only choose them if they could come out in the same day. I had a guy at my house at 7 pm that night setting me up.
