Random Thoughts the 13th: Jason Takes RTT

Is it wrong or shameful that I have secret hiding spots for snacks and such around the house? With three kids, if I get bakery cookies or a bag of chips to just have. I will see maybe one cookie or a couple chips out of the bag before the wolves take it over. The wife has tried to have hiding spots, but they usually get found. I have realized that nobody will fix anything besides me so I can hide things among my wrenches out in the garage. Nobody touches that stuff.

EDIT to avoid 3 in a row posts. LUCKY ME, fifth grade band concert tonight.

With a 5'2" wife and a 4'11" daughter, anything over 6' is all mine!

I could also hide stuff in the dishwasher as well. I think I may be the only one in the house that knows it exists.

I'll have a girl in a bikini complete mine while I sit at the swim-up bar.

200.webp

My sympathies on the concert - I remember those days all too well. The only thing worse is listening to a 5th grade ORCHESTRA.
It used to be that all home-made cookies were gone within a day. At some point after the last kid moved out, I baked my normal double-batch of Tollhouse cookies. They actually went stale before we finished them, and we did a little "stale cookie dance" in the kitchen when we realized that we no longer had to put "our share" of treats under lock and key or risk never getting to eat them.

You must be just the opposite of Mrs. Velo. She is of the opinion that a homemade cookie is no longer good as soon as it is fully cooled from the oven. I often have to hide a ziplock bag of cookies from her to keep her from throwing them away after just a few days.

I was usually lucky if I got half of the batch INTO the oven. Blasted (not-so) little dough thieves! And before any of you food nazis yell at me, I've been eating raw dough for 60+ years. I'm not going to stop now. :D

Throw away cookies?!? I usually have to chip a tooth before I'm like "Alright, maybe it's time."

Aw, who am I kidding. I'll soak them in milk to soften them up.

Right. Which usually results in me eating more of them than I should so that they don't suffer an unnatural and unholy fate. That is why I blame Mrs. Velo for my weight. Just like I blame her for shrinking the waist band on many of my pants.

Regarding food snitching: at our peak, we had me, Lew & 4 teenage boys (18,18,16,14) in the house. When I baked a pie or a cake, we would divide them into 6 equal pieces and put each person's initial on one piece. That way we "knew" which pieces were ours. I rarely ate my share right after the meal - I would usually save it for later in the evening. Didn't take me long to realize that the little buggers were shaving edges off of my piece, so that by the time I got around to eating it, it was about half as wide as originally cut.

To hear them talk, though, we routinely starved them. Ummmmmmmm...yeah....

I am now 50 and I still cannot understand why people will ruin good cookie dough by baking it. Back in the 70's, Mom would make a double batch of cookie dough, bake 1 dozen cookies (those were for her and Dad) and then the rest of the dough would stay in the bowl in the fridge for us boys to eat. Can never remember the bowl lasting more than 24 hours.

Obviously teenage boys since they apparently ate the bowl as well.

We had a old tupperware cookie bowl growing up that was only ever used for cookies. It looked like hell, but it was the 'cookie bowl'.

One 4th of July in high school, young Cooler decided to throw a party while his parents were away. As it so happens, underage drinking and fireworks is not the best combination ever invented. The cookies bowl was emptied of its contents and then the recipient of a few M80s. RIP, cookie bowl.

Of course, I threw it away to hide the evidence.

Days later, my mom made a batch of cookies and could not find that bowl anywhere.

I did not fess up to the 'cookie bowl incident' until I was in my 30s. It is still a topic of conversation at every family get-together. In the eyes of my siblings, I'm a murderer.

Rocky almost beat world heavyweight boxing champion Apollo Creed eating a dozen raw eggs for breakfast every morning thus proving that raw eggs are good for you.

Joined the basketball pool. Hope nobody decides to stalk me because I couldn't figure out how to put in my username instead of my full name. Oh well, I have nothing to hide.

The wind was strong enough to blow my headphones out of my ears on the way to class today. At this point I'd be fine with 30° and no wind, let alone above freezing.
