I-State vs Texas A&M

I'd come and revisit the stadium in 2-4 years as we're in the process of massive upgrades. Right now it looks like an overglorified high school stadium - within 5 years, once we get the renovations completed and the south endzone enclosed, it should look like a stadium that actually belongs in the Big XII.

Don't worry, there's no construction going on right now, that stadium expansion is just our pipe dream. Not sure why anyone would suggest you "wait a few years" and then come visit after an expansion that "might" happen.

First off - let's make something abundantly clear - I never said WAIT for him to visit - I told him to make a RETURN visit.

Second - the expansion seems to be a little bit more than a pipe dream as the funding seems to come in little by little on a monthly basis. And before you correct me in saying that the $5 mil was solely for the east side renovation, yes, that is true. However, that's $5 mill LESS that the Athletic Department has to spend on the east side renovation using current/future funds and $5 mil MORE that it can apply to the south side expansion using those current/future funds.

Never been to El Bait Shop, looks like I'll have to go! Oh, the Royal Mile and The German place (can't remeber it's name off the top of my head) are good too.

Yes, you have to go if you've never been. It's beer mecca in Des Moines, IMO.

Hessen Haus! I should have known that. I love their saurkraut!!!!

They do have good sauerkraut, but I prefer the potato salad and red cabbage.

Also, the sauerkraut balls make me so happy. They are the best appetizers I've ever had anywhere ever.

If Campus town is to young for you I suggest Main St. here in Ames. I used to live in College Station for a year and there is a bar on main st. called Corner Pocket nice pool hall like Poets in College Station the only difference is there is a nicer bar upstairs called DG's Taphouse. The London Underground is another bar to check out (my friend owns it) great selection of different kinds of beer and great enviroment as well.

Campus town is a really good time too, so there is a lot of places to go on both sides of town. No Smoking in our bars here in Iowa just to let you know. For food Great Plains Pizza, Hickory Park, Battles BBQ, Jeffs pizza on campus, Fuji Steakhouse, Old Chicago, Wallabys, Dublin Bay. I strongly suggest to tailgate early, in my eyes it is top notch and a sight to see. I will be in line no later than 5:30 AM in the main lot south of the scoreboard across University Avenue look for a chevy conversion van that is the color primer with a Van tastic flag, anyway hope the info was helpful.

I know of at least one Aggie Alum in Des Moines, you wont be all on your own. He saw the light and married a Cyclone........

If you are like most Texans I know, die-hard it's Texas style or nothing BBQ fan, skip the BBQ joints in Ames. They are good, but not Texas style. Battles comes closer than Hickory Park. As has been mentioned, tour campus and hit the tailgating.

Oh, and if you guys have anybody interested in 2 extra tickets, $50 (total) for the pair. You'll get stuck about 4 seats down from me though. :) Section G, Row 15.

I'm 26, so college life isn't too far gone. I think we'll most likely stay in Des Moines the night prior (Friday) and then visit and see Ames Saturday.

See you in section G :)

No night in Ames is complete without the one, the only, FLYING BURRITO

I'm sure some people would argue you need to hit the Gyro man on Welch insted (some may even argue for the Superdog stand), but when I return to Ames I always hit the Flying Burrito!

I still like the old delievery car too

Some may choose to argue that.... but not me! I still look forward to hitting up the Flying B whenever I am back in town. :notworthy:

I avoid both FlyBur and the Gyro because of their owner. If you despise the work that the Ames City Council has done in dragging their feet on the new mall (among other things), the blame can go squarely on this person and two other council members.

The Gyro stand on Welch is tough to argue against, though.

It's really really hard to argue against.

2 habanero gyros at 2 AM sounds really really good right about now.

The gyro stand and super dog are fine, and have been around longer than FB, but I have yet to find anywhere a place that hits the spot like Flying. All my friends who never went to ISU would insist on going to Flying Burrito before doing anything else when they would come to Ames to party. When I get to Ames tonight, I'll be heading straight for it.

Fair enough, but I personally could care less about the Ames mall, and if I did, there is no way I would let those feelings come between me and 2.5 lbs of heaven wrapped in tin foil...

Oh really? What high school did you go to? I'd love to see any high school stadium hold 55,000 people.

He said glorified, first and foremost.

Secondly, he's largely right. I love JTS, but it really is just a glorified High School stadium at the moment.

There are plenty of high school stadiums that hold 20k+ in the US. JTS is just about 3 times the size of those, with pretty much the same design.

Once we get the renovations done on both sides, and at least get the south end zone bowled in, that might change, but it's not currently the "class of the Big XII".

Actually, only twice the size. Actual solid seating, excluding the hillsides, is only 45,000. We only get to 55,000+ if all four hillsides are packed.
