Maybe the Broncos won't finish last in the division this year.

I was listening to a national radio broadcast this morning, and they were talking about the Mack situation. The point that the host was making, one I hadn't considered before, is that the Raiders didn't really attempt to resign Mack because they couldn't afford to. I guess ownership is really, really in debt. Davis is personally over a billion dollars in the red, and apparently they might not have the cash to pay a big signing bonus to Mack.

He was saying that this whole Vegas move is an attempt to increase the value of the team, so that Davis can sell it to get out of debt.

Now I don't know if that's true, but it would explain why they wouldn't even talk to a star player in his prime. And if it is true, it's absolutely pathetic. You have to really work to not make money as an NFL owner.

Raiders cutting Martavius Bryant, whom they traded a 3rd round pick for this off-season. Gruden is a genius, tho....

Current 49ers RB (and former Viking) Jerick McKinnon tore his ACL at practice yesterday and is out for the season. The 49ers visit the Vikings Week 1.

And now this:

He looks thrilled to be there.

Thomas was never going to hold out into the regular season and miss those half a mil game checks. He'll play out this season and move on or another team will lose a safety to injury and make a deal for him midseason.

So now, we're left with just Leveon Bell not reporting. Doesn't sound like he's going to be reporting any time soon, either.

Yeah, who knows? He can hold out until Week Ten before he loses an accrued year toward free agency. Maybe he's seen a couple non-QBs (Donald and Mack) get QB money in the last week and that's made him that much more determiend to get to the open market next year with as little wear and tear as possible.

There's no incentive for the Steelers to do anything about it, either. With all the firepower they have on offense they should be able to get along OK without him.

It will be interesting to see who blinks first.

I gotta love some people who don't understand this process. I was chatting with a Steelers fan over the weekend and he's just fed up with Bell. He was saying that the team should fine him for every day he misses. I was telling him that this is different than a regular contract holdout. Bell is not technically under contract right now. He's not really a member of the team, until he signs the franchise tender. They can't fine him anything. Now, he won't get game checks, but that's not the same thing.

I'm a Steelers fan and I'm just sick of it. I kind of wish they had let him walk at the end of last season. I don't even think they can trade him because no team will be willing to sign him for what he wants.

I think Bell is far enough down the road now to just stay with it. I get the thinking - he's going to hit the open market next spring no matter what, so why not avoid the extra 250-300 touches he would otherwise accumulate over the first ten weeks?

The only compelling argument is the game check issue. If he sits out the first ten weeks then he stands to lose around 8 million in salary. Is it worth that to sit out knowing full well that he could still blow out a knee in Week 13 or something like that and tank his free agency value?

This guy went broke after inheriting a billion dollar business? No way!

Yeah, he might not get it anywhere. But, from Bell's perspective, he's sees Gurley get a ulti year contract that pays him more per year than the franchise tag is worth. Bell sees himself as the best running back in the league, and it's hard to argue too much with that.

Yeah, I can understand that. But I can't blame either side for digging in. Le'Veon Bell is right for wanting to cash in on a long term deal, and Kirk Cousins just showed everyone how betting on yourself can pay off if you stay healthy.
And the Steelers are right for not wanting to pay a premium for a non-premium position. Le'Veon Bell is one of the best and most dynamic players in the league, but he also plays a fairly replaceable position plus there's a ton of wear and tear plus he has a lengthy injury history.
