The supplemental draft will be held tomorrow afternoon. There are five players in this year's pool; two of them had early round grades for the 2019 draft. One of them - the CB from VA Tech, I think - had reps from all 32 teams present for his pro day workout.

Today was the deadline to get a Franchise Tag guy signed to a longer deal. But didn't happen:

I don't think anyone was expecting anything to happen today. I'm very curious to see what the market will be for Leveon Bell if he makes it to unrestricted free agency. Someone is going to be paying him big bucks for what he's accomplished and not what he's going to do. A 27 year old running back with a lot of wear and tear? Buyer beware.

Stud running backs on their rookie deals like Zeke Elliott and Todd Gurley should be looking at this and taking note. A team has rights to a running back for five years on a rookie deal, and then one year on the franchise tag. That's six years into a career, meaning an elite RB could conceivably play the bulk of his entire career on a rookie deal.

The NFL's new anthem policy almost made it to the first preseason game.
The league is handling this so stupidly. They never should have said anything from the beginning. Just ignore it. They've only made it worse.

The Packers financials that were released show the league is doing just fine, monetarily, despite what people would have you believe. This controversy is only hurting them to the degree that they let it. They never should have responded.

They're in a no-win position, too. The NFLPA has all the bargaining power here. Why should they help ownership out without getting a significant concession in return?

agreed. The league needs to operate from the mindset of knowing that this problem will not completely go away. Nothing they can do can make that happen. So, what they need to be looking for is a solution where they're comfortable with the amount of heat they'll take, because they'll take heat no matter what.

I wonder if the simplest thing for them to do would be to wash their hands of the whole damn mess and say that it's a team policy. Give them their own length of rope and let each owner decide what their team policy is.

It would be simple, but it's not going to stop the furor. All that would do is make both sides mad.

That said, I could definitely see that as the route they go, just because the NFL is still trying to have its cake and eat it too, on this issue.

That's true. But there's no apparent outcome where someone isn't going to be mad. Really the only one winning here is Trump. If the league somehow gets all the players to stand, then he gets to claim he pressured them into it. If they back off, he gets to rake them over the coals for being soft and unpatriotic.
