NBA: Summer 2018 Off Season Thread

There are some bruuuutal contracts out there (Luol Deng, Ryan Anderson) but not many are as bad as this one.

Wouldn't be surprised if Melo negotiates a buyout and joins either LeBron or CP3 as a 6th man in their next stop. Melo is on the decline but can at least still score and contribute. As bad as 27.3 mil appears, it at least is expiring this year.

Deng and Anderson have 2 years left making them virtually untradable and neither can even get on the floor. I'd argue they are worse situations.

Anderson is at least healthy and can play basketball. Why isn't Deng playing?

I think the Mikal Bridges trade is going to look terrible for Phoenix in two years. I think the Sixers fleeced them.

Even if Zhaire Smith doesn’t work out, they still have that 2021 Miami pick, and Mikal Bridges has some bust potential. This is a guy that played with three other Top 35 picks, while Zhaire played as the 4 man for lowly Texas Tech.

I think there's more bust potential with Smith. Bridges is a polished product. It's obvious that Smith is an elite athlete but that doesn't necessarily make him a great basketball player.

What I thought was weird about the deal is that Bridges doesn't really fit Phoenix's timeline to turn things around. He's a guy who can help a team right now. Smith is a project who they could have brough along slowly for a couple sesons.

That's a shame. Good or bad, Lance was always interesting. And really 4.3 mil isn't all that bad for a playmaking wing, however erratic he might be.

I wonder if Indy is clearing salary to make a move. Oladipo is the only player on the roster with a guaranteed salary for 2019-20. As tempting as it might be to just run back the same group in 2018 and hope for anoither career year out of Collison and Bogdanovich, Pritchard might be getting ready to reshape the roster right now.

If Thaddeus Young opts out of his contract to test free agency, the Pacers will be armed with 26 million in cap space plus multiple expiring contracts. They're still not a free agency destination, but it does make them potential trade partners in a lot of different scenarios.

Tough decision. 24 mil is a lot to pass up. He might be able to secure a long term deal for more on the free agent market, but who knows? He'll be 30 when the 2018 season starts, and for a big man who relies primarily on his athleticism that's a big red flag.

Smart decision on his part.
I doubt he'd get 24 million on the market this year considering his limitations and pace and space style the NBA is trying to move to. Obviously the ultimate goal is lock up 3-4 years for 15-20 mill per to finish his career, but the market is likely not there. I do think Jordan likes living in LA so getting one more year there at a premium salary is a pretty good option. Currently there are more teams projected to be under the cap next year so opting in a 24 and getting those last 2-3 could be equally beneficial.

I like this move for the Wizards, I think. Depends on what the long term play is, but they need to shake things up a bit. The Wall/Beal/Porter core is going nowhere fast. I've heard that they may be looking to pull off a sign and trade deal with the Pelicans where Boogie Cousins would go to DC and Otto Porter Jr. would go to New Orleans. I don't know how the financials would work, but if they could figure it out it'd be a home run for the Pelicans.

My Journey: Part One - Totally screw over the team that drafted me and helped develop me and made me rich by forcing my way out of town.

Just because the Pacers got lucky and ended up with arguably a better player in the OKC deal doesn't make PG less of an ******* for how he forced his way out of Indy.

Or....
I was drafted by a franchise and played at All Star Level for them for 7 years, but the team was looking like a also ran in a weak east with me if I stay. I want to chose my next situation, and think it would be best for both parties if I move on once my agreed to contract is up. I even notified them a full year ahead of time to give the Pacers an option to get value in a trade and they did.

All about perspective.

A lot of "PG staying in OKC" smoke out there. I wonder what the Pacers could have received last summer if teams knew he'd resign long term. Probably could have got an insane haul from the Lakers or Boston before the draft (before Ball/Tatum and Kyrie trade).

Notifying the team that you want out early is one thing. I can understand that. Doing it less than a week before the draft (after making public comments about hoping the Pacers would be able to bring in more talent to help him and giving Pritchard a chance to build the roster only days earlier) and THEN leaking to the media that he had asked for a trade is another. He torpedoed any trade leverage they might have had by the timing and manner of his decision, and they were lucky to fall into an All-NBA guard and solid rotation player. Nine times out of ten in a deal like that the team moving a superstar gets nickels on the dollar.
