NBA: Summer 2018 Off Season Thread

Funny but yeah, maybe. Porter is a weird one because it's not totally implausible that he goes second overall - God knows what Vlade and the Kings will do - or he could fall into the teens due to medical red flags and that weird quote the other day where he compared himself favorably to T-Mac, KD, and Giannis. Biggest risk in the draft IMO. Which probably means that Danny Ainge will trade up to get him and in two years he'll be an All-Star.
Whoever goes to Sacramento: RIP career. Sacramento should have relocated to Seattle when it had the chance a couple years ago.

The front office and ownership is a mess on how to build a team. It is unfortunate because the community will support the Kings if they are good. (not to mention the baby blues alt unis are cool). They do have a number of intriguing young players that could be a fun team if they could grow together but, I have no faith ownership will be patient.
If Steve Balmer would have won the bid and they would have likely been moved to Seattle.

What time is the actual first pick due in tomorrow? 7:15 eastern?

I think coverage starts at 7 EST, but the actual draft might not get going for a good 15-20 minutes after that. Teams get five minutes to make a selection, so around 7:15 - 7:30 EST seems like a good bet.

I've been seeing where they might take Bagley just because he's the only high level prospect who's really embraced the possibility of playing in Sacramento. That's a sad state of affairs, and it is too bad because Kings fans are pretty passionate and make for one hell of a home court advantage when the team is any good.

Latest floating out there is the first three picks are set. Ayton, Bagley and Doncic.

A team led with a front office led by Vlade and Peja passing on the most decorated young Euroleague player ever to take a risk on a guy who played three college games would be a very Kings thing to do.

If that's true the Grizzlies are going to be disappointed. I think they'd be thrilled with the prospect of teaming up Doncic or Bagley with Marc Gasol and Mike Conley Jr. Find a way to dump that Parsons contract and they're in decent shape.

I'd heard the Kings are in love with Porter Jr. as well, but I was hearing they know taking him at 2 is not the best option, and are open to trading back. But who know with the Kings haha

They’ll find a way to **** this up. I think they should go with Doncic. Fox and Doncic could be a good backcourt in a couple years

I do think Doncic is really good. I understand the last minute cold feet by front offices, due to flubs of high Euro picks in the past, but I think he could be worth the #2.

Only thing that scares me about his situation is that article that came out a few weeks ago of him saying he could possibly stay in Europe this year.

Thats whats strange about this draft is there is a bunch of good posts but good posts dont work as well in the current nba, for the most part they fill 20 min roles on contenders. Yet teams may end up taking them in spades for the top 10 picks passing up a player like Mikal Bridges who fits perfect into the current league.

I could be wrong but aren't the European guys usually projects that didn't get a ton of minutes with whatever team they were playing for in the Euro League?

Doncic was the best player in the Euro League last season, and that's arguably a higher level of competition than NCAA play. There shouldn't be any question about his ability to play. And that the trepidation to pull the trigger on a European player is coming from two guys who cut their teeth in Euro League is bizarre. Doncic to Sacramento at #2 should be the easiest pick of the night, but you know....Kings.

I think a lot of it depends on where a team is at in their rebuilding process. The Warriors aren't forever. Eventually the band will break up and the leaguewide trends will turn again, so it doesn't make sense for a team like Phoenix that is years away at best to load up on guys who can match up with Golden State. Just get the most talented guys and worry about it down the road. But for a team whose window is open right now, they can't go burning a pick on a big man who can't defend the perimeter or stretch the floor. They have an immediate need to counter Golden State's versatility.

Totally agree things will slowly change and you take the top player no matter the position for the true bottom dwellers, it just seems the love affair for the 3 pt shot and spacing is here to stay, big guys that are athletic freaks think Kevin Garnett would absolutely crush it in the league even with out a 3pt shot right now, but I see more Greg Monroe types in this draft that say 15 years ago would be amazing players but now are bench players because they cant guard anyone.

That's my issue with this draft as well. Ayton and, to a lesser extent, Bagley are both talented post players. Ayton I think has more upside with his athleticism and he has a decent jumpshot but not one I think you'd want to rely on. Neither one, thought, has the versatility of a Anthony Davis or Embiid. I think it could come for Ayton, but I just don't see it with Bagley.

I really wonder were Trae Young will fall in the draft. I had a friend say he would take him as high as 6, I don’t think I’d take him top 10

It's not arguable at all, it's much better. The gap between the Euro League and the NBA is much less than the gap between it and the NCAA. I'm with you, I don't understand this at all, most euro lottery picks are guys coming off the bench on teams over there, here's a guy who is MVP of the second best league in the world at 19 who seems like a high floor and high ceiling guy.

I have no idea what the Griz can do to try and make this a quicker turn around than what it is set up to be. They shot themselves in the foot last season firing Fizdale, choosing a tail-end-of-his-career Gasol over him. Trading back and getting some more picks may be the best play at this point.
