2018 Cap City League

Regarding Jacobson, it should not be THAT big of shock that a non-blue chip big man eventually develops into a much more versatile player and much more of a rounded offensive threat by the time he is a junior (or a "senior" in his fourth year of college now) like Jacobson compared to an over-matched freshman and sophomore on a bad Nebraska team. His efficiency numbers are higher than Solomon's on rebounding alone. If we are going to start two true big men, I see no reason it could not be Jacobson. Just not being terrified of fouls down low like we have for the past three seasons (with only 1-2 viable big men) would be nice, too.

They probably do. I would as well. But not for his shooting.

High School isn’t college, i know that, but Jacobson shot 36% from 3 his senior year at Waukee (30-82) Not amazing but better than the 18% he’s shot at Nebraska on 7 of 39 attempts.

Definitely agree with that point. I almost expect a whistle every time the opposing team drives to the basket.

Jacobsen really stood out to me at Nebraska (even watching as a mildly interested non-fan of either team) simply because he plays a lot like Dustin Hogue. Always active. Seems to consider any rebound his whether it's in his area or not. He'll be a fan favorite, whether he's developed a shooting touch or not.

Every time a big man is chucking from outside there is a hidden tax you pay on decreasing the chance of an offensive rebound from the miss.

For a guy we know is a pretty good rebounder and we know is not a great shooter (at least not yet proven in a game), we might end up paying that tax.

Might be better just to keep him down low -- let him fight for boards or box people out, like Solomon does, and make room for Lard on the offensive glass.

Lard generated 5-10 points per game on offensive rebounds alone when going.

Having a big who can hit 1 of 3 from outside can result in dividends beyond those 3 points when his man has to respect his shot and can't just lurk in the lane on defense.

Yes, there are hidden costs but there are hidden benefits as well. There is also a benefit to having everyone at least comfortable attempting a 3. At the end of a shot clock it isn't always who you want to have the ball who ends up having to take a shot to beat the clock.

Correct. Also the added benefit of opening up the lane for others to score. As far as rebounding, the other team's big who has to come out to defend the 3 won't be close to the hoop to grab a defensive rebound. Would be interesting to see offensive rebounding stats on teams with a 3-pt shooting big.

Jacobson looked excellent tonight; haven't seen stats posted on Twitter yet but he got hot from behind the arc for awhile. He was also able to create his own shot off the dribble and has a decent pull up jumper.

THT put on a show in the first half, he was nailing NBA range 3's back to back to back; one of them was just a step over the half court line.

Saw Haliburton play for the first time - more athletic than I expected: had a baseline drive that he dunked pretty easily. Once he puts on a few pounds in the weight room he should offer a good size advantage at the 1 down the road.

I know you hardly ever RS anyone in basketball, but could we see Halliburton get a RS? He just looks SO skinny. He has talent obviously, but he is so thin he's just going to get tossed around I think.

Stats and some basic observations...

-- THT went off... 46 points, though he was not exactly efficient about it
-- 7/13 from three, so turns out the kid can shoot (at least some)
-- rest of the team was super meh, especially without Zi0n playing

-- Jacobson was a monster, going 14/22 from the field and 8/13 from three
-- Grabbed 10 rebounds, as well (so did THT for his team)
-- PM of 25, which is nice, for a grand total of 38 on fewer shots than THT (30 versus 22)

Obviously a glorified pickup game, but good game from MJ12.

-- Conditt picked up where he left off for Puerto Rico in this one
-- PM of 28, scored 25 on 20 field goal attempts, plus 12 rebounds
-- some clanging from range, though, going 1/5

-- Eric Steyer (our new walk-on) had 5 points... didn't do much
-- oh well, a good walk-on would have been nice last year, but not critical this year

I think we might have gotten a real steal with Conditt. If he bulks up and keeps adding skill, he is going to be a wonderful stretch-and-swat big man in a few years.

Since when the hell is 46 points on 19/30 shooting (63%) not efficient? Did you expect him to go 20/20?

It's a scrimmage with very little defense. The standards are different.

He does that in a real game and, yeah, that's amazing.

I was mostly looking at his +/- number.
Pretty sure mom of the Drake guys on his team showed up and he is the only Iowa stare player. Their 22nd leading scorer was Reed Mells. His +/- is worthless to look at.

Agree with what you can see of Conditt so far he's going to be a really fun one to watch develop. Id even imagine next season being the year he really breaks out rather than 2 years away. After watching the highlights was surprised to see the Grinnell player was the one with the impressive dunk.

You called Jacobson a "monster" for getting 8 less points on 0.3% better shooting and getting the same amount of rebounds.

Who cares if his teammates aren't as good?
