@BoxsterCy you might have enjoyed what we've been doing for the past few hours. We had a forester out here and we were traipsing through the woods talking about what management we can do to improve tree growth and better manage the populations. One part is Basswood & shagbark hickory and a couple of white oak; one part is black maple, ash, elm, a grove of Kentucky coffee trees & a few shagbark; and the far side of the creek (a south facing slope) has a couple of white oak and shagbarks. There's a couple of trees out there that he estimates to be around 80-90 years old. :D
We have a lot of invasive mustard & honeysuckle, and a bunch of young maples...the older trees are, well, getting old, and the younger trees can't fight past the canopy. He's helping us write up a management plan and an environmental grant to see if we can establish an oak savannah on that south-facing slope, plus do some strategic cutting, goat rental, and controlled burn to improve our woodland acres.

KC, depending how long and how many goats you might need, you might want to just buy goats for the summer and then sell them off on the end. They are pretty low maintenance from what I understand about them. They sure like to climb on stuff though.

I had actually thought about it - but goats on the go brings in the fencing and the goats, and it's a no muss no fuss thing for about 3-5 days. We're only using them in the first section mentioned. They would decimate the young maples in the other two sections, so those will be cleared more selectively.
Also, we have coyotes. I don't want to have to deal with serving them up a smorgasbord over the summer. :D

Final update for the day...kind of a doozy.
.
Was "up top" to transfer clips from the camera to the computer. I realized I needed to book it "downstairs" to get an area athlete. I book it down one set of steps, and head for the 2nd set, which has a very low ceiling. My sunglasses were on top of my head, and I didn't duck quick enough. My sunglasses got rammed into my head...hard. Any other time I would have stopped and felt sorry for myself...but I had to get this athlete's event. I get trackside, breathe a sigh of relief, and happen to touch my head where I hit it.

I was bleeding...pretty good. I eventually got to a bathroom, which did have paper towels, and wetted them and ran them over my hair. Not a gash, just a scrape. But ow. *sigh*

I forgot to mention - goats LOVE poison ivy. BONUS!!!

So it is mainly one girl that is one of the middle kids of four so MrsWx doesn't think she gets much attention at home. Nice girl and they play well together although she is 5-7 years older than him. In the last week she has cleaned, helped with the daycare kids and made his bed all on her own...so that was kind of weird.

Sounds like in a couple of yrs you can hire her as a baby sitter, sounds like a nice, responsible kid.

By the way have you ever flown a glider? There was one coming in for a landing at Ames when I drove by today, looked pretty neat.

@SaraV sorry to hear about the head bonk. How did the local kids do? Man some girl from SEPolk had a good day according to the news.

Or perhaps a mixed herd. Some milk goats and some meat goats!

We're into hour 7. No official lunch yet...just trail mix and water smuggled in. Just looked at my schedule, and we were supposed to be here until at least 8p. We're running (ha.) about 30 minutes behind.

Daughter looks like a lobster. Everybody but me went. I started at 6:30 am and got home at 10:30 pm. Next two are shaping up to be the long days. Nice light sprinkle on Sunday and hit it hard on M/T and it would be perfect.

Strawberry smoothie procured. It has all the sugar. I need it.

I need to introduce you to my 11 year old. He loves the vending areas down there and is the concession runner for everybody at state track. He knows what every concession stand and vendor serves.

Oh yes, the sunburn front. Wore a v-neck t-shirt, forgot sunblock on the décolletage. And the back of the neck. Ow.

Pekin boys won 4x800 and the anchor of that team won the 400. Their relay teams are fun to watch. Still have a few left to run.

And holy smokes, that SEP girl. Sydney Milani? She easily won her heats in the 200m and 100m. (Pretty sure she'll win 200m...don't think she'll win 100m) She ran a 52.90 400m today to win that title.:eek::eek: Husband just told me that with one of her prelim times (probably 200m), she would have won the "slow heat" on the boys' side.

Ran out of grape jelly a couple days ago, and didn't get any bought until yesterday. Now the orioles are gone.....and the vixen is not happy with me.

Also, there was a little mouse scurrying around the deck, picking up sunflower seed shells and dropping them. The vixen hates mice, and is convinced he will be in the house soon. I said, "The only way he gets in here is if one of us lets him in." I don't think she believes me.

Remember tomorrow is Armed Forces Day - be sure and thank your family members and friends who have served this great nation in defense of all we hold dear.

Daughter Shelby was in the Marine Corps, and served in both Iraq and Afghanistan. She is 100% disabled (surgeries on neck, back, both knees, and feet) but still able to be active. We will be giving her a big party tomorrow for sure.
