In Memoriam: Ames Business/Restaurants

2. Hombre's was where Johnny's was at which used to be a hotel where Best Buy and the small strip mall is at. There was motel where the Ford dealer is currently at a buddy from college parent's ran it. There was the Silver Saddle motel were Old Chicago is currently at.

Johnnys was at the Marriott. Where you mentioned it.

I love these things...

6. Old Es Tas. Spent a lot if time their in summer. Unique shots and tacos. Awesome vibe. Always the first bar of the night. Also, on busy nights the taco stand outside was money.
.

I was going to add this one as well. I still liked Es Tas after they moved, but old Es Tas was great! Kinda like original Battles vs. Welch Battles.

Chick fil a came in when they did the renovation in 1995 or 1996. I didn't know what it was at the time, but man, wish it was still there.

Along with McDonalds (where the Cy's and Fries conveniently has the same colors) and some other stuff. That was really a dramatic change from the old cafeteria sort of thing it used to be.

Remember the old debates about turning the Hub into a McDonald's, and whether exhaust or whatever from that potential McD's would be deterimental to book preservation in Parks?

Of course, now about anything goes in Parks, but there's no McDs next door.

Anyone remember Collegiate Pacific? People used to flock there on misprinted/defective shirt days for cheap shirts

I'm pretty sure my parents used to get shirts, bibs, onesies, etc for my siblings and me from there when we were infants/toddlers. I remember several things with random college mascots on it with sayings like "I'm a little tiger" or "Future gopher" on it.

haven't seen Black Market Pizza on the thread. It wasn't necessarily the best or my favorite, but I do sometimes miss their sweet potato crust pizza. It was nice to have a deep-dish option in Ames.

And there was also the opposite of that with Joe's Pizza and Pasta for a New York style pizza. I think it was owned by Shaban Dika's family?

Not sure when The Alibi was around. Thumbs Up opened in maybe 1980 or 1981. I started school in 1979 and I don’t think it was open then.
The Alibi was what is now Outlaws. Thumbs Up was on Welch I think Mickey's Irish Pub.

(Getting these names off of Google maps so I'm not sure if they are current)

Yeah I had no idea where Alibi was, but around where Mickey’s is seems about right for Thumbs Up.

Was The Alibi a large dance place? I remember one of those down Chamberlain from 7-11 (now Kum & Go) about where Outlaws is but I only went there a few times, seemed like a major meat market even compared to the other bars.

Was DaVincis the Italian place on the south side of LW almost outside of Ames on the west side of town? If so, definitely DaVincis.

Does anyone remember the name of this place? The owner said they were shutting down but planned to reopen. I don't think they ever did but the food was awesome. They had higher end Italian with homemade noodles and such. It was in this building on Lincoln Way in west Ames around 2008 or so.

It was the Broiler for forever, and then I don't know what it got rebranded as. It was the same owners as Oddfellows, wasn't it?

Black Market was after my time in Ames but I heard it was pretty good, just to high priced and not well run. Didn't they try to open a 2nd location fairly quickly? Wish I got to try it. I wish wish we had a nice deep dish option around the metro (and I know the 2 places that will be mentioned and they both are mediocre at best).

I'm really not sure. I was only in Ames for 3 years and never knew the place existed until the tail end of my time there. I don't think the place was open for very long as this particular Italian place before the owner realized people weren't driving outside of west Ames for dinner. That's what he made it sound like at least.
