NFL: Offseason Thread

As a Chiefs fan I'm not that excited about the Watkins signing. Seems like he is always battling injuries and he has just 2 games the past 2 season where he broke 100 yards. Guy has been all hype throughout his career but very inconsistent and injury prone. He's to hoping he stays healthy and is a system where he can succeed but I am not expecting much from him. I haven't looked at who else is out there for WR but it was obvious Chiefs needed to bring in at least 1 decent one to give Maholmes more options.

I like the Hitchens signing even if he is a former Hawkeye. He's finished 2nd in tackles on the Cowboys last season and that was playing next to Sean Lee who gets a lot of tackles himself. Chiefs needed help at inside linebacker and now have 2 young, solid ones with him and Ragland. Chiefs still need to get some help in the secondary and both defensive and offensive lines but I would guess some of that may come in the draft.

Plot twist? I don't think it's all that noteworthy - just the Vikes doing their due diligence. Hard to imagine New Orleans letting Drew Brees get away. Still, though. If you're talking about shelling out 90 million guaranteed I'd rather give it to Brees than Cousins.

Lol. No. The dude is 39 years old and already showed signs of aging last year. I would take Cousins over Brees, at this point, any day.

I think Brees would be a really good short term solution, but Cousins is so much younger and could be even better on a good team. Washington didn't have all that much support for him.

As long as they aren't paying too much for Watkins he could be a really good player for the Chiefs. He's talented but has been injury prone. Pay him a more moderate salary and he could do good things when he's on the field.

You mean last year when he had a higher completion %, more yards, and fewer INTs than Cousins while not missing a single game? ****, I hope I age that well.

Cousins is good but he is overrated. For the Vikes he's fine because they won't ask him to carry the team. But they're paying elite QB money for a good QB. It is what it is; the market determined what he's worth.

If you ask me whether I want Brees or Cousins as my starting QB for the next 2-3 years I'm taking Brees every time. And he costs less!

Brees has and always has had more at his disposal than Cousins. From 2012-2016 Brees averaged 445 completions, 5,074 yards, and 37 touchdowns a year. Last year Brees had 386 completions, 4,334 yards, and only 23 touchdowns. A steep drop off from where he has been. He's aging and Kirk is only hitting his prime.

If you have the choice between Brees or Cousins for the next 2/3 years. You take Brees 10 times out of 10.

I recognize the name but is this good?

Probably. He was productive in Dallas and he's young. I think he was just a victim of the cap crunch in Dallas. Most signs had him following his defensive coordinator from Dallas to Indy where they're in sore need of linebackers, but I'd bet KC just offered more money.

They also ran the ball a lot more than previous years because they have two great running backs on the roster in Mark Ingram and Alvin Kamara. Bree’s didn’t have to throw the ball as much because those two were taking a load off of him. Not to mention there defense was much better than what they’ve had in the last few years which meant they didn’t have to throw the ball all game long. Kirk Cousins is the most overrated free agent I have ever seen. He grades out as a middle of the road QB. Bree’s still grades out as a top 10 QB.

Cousins doesn't put the Vikes over, Brees would have

Come at me at the end of next season

That's one way to look at it. Yet another way to look at it would be to see that in 2017 Brees finally had a decent run game and defense so he didn't have to carry the team. They were a run-first offense in 2017. But enough about Brees. As another poster said he's staying in New Orleans so it's moot.

You and I might just disagree on how good Cousins is. I think he's a top 10-ish QB getting paid like an elite QB. Not his fault. If anyone you can blame the Redskins for tagging him in consecutive years and driving his price through the roof. But if you think he'll be a dramatic upgrade over what Keenum was in 2017 then I think you should get ready to be disappointed. Time will tell. With QBs you never know.

Keenum for 2 years at 36 mill...not terrible but I think he’ll do horrible in Denver, especially with our crap coach.

Brees is #1 in career completion percentage - that's not just active QBs, that's all-time.

Although, to CloneFan4's point, Cousins is tied for 3rd on that list (tied with Kurt Warner).

I think his numbers will regress some, but they would have pretty much anywhere including in Minnesota. Throw out last season and everything about Keenum screams career backup. But good for him for cashing in and getting paid while he can.
