Grabbed the mail this morning. Saw my heating bill was there. Didn't really want to open it and pulled out the next letter.

Here's my jury duty story. I was called last spring for Polk County. Went down to spend my day at the courthouse. I sat for a few different cases and didn't get picked. Then sat for another right before lunch. Turns out I knew the lawyer for the defendant. He was the coach for his sons little league team and I umpired his games. Took me a few minutes to figure out where i knew him from since he looks different in a suit than he does in a ball cap. Went through the whole case description and questions. Had to tell the judge that I knew the lawyer and how. I assured him that I could be impartial even though I knew him. I figured I would get crossed off by the prosecution, no doubt.

Well comes time for them to pick the people they are keeping for the case, the judge reads off names and I didn't hear mine called, so I go back to the jury pool room and go to lunch. Well turns out the judge read my name, but I misunderstood him and didn't stay in the room. I thought I was going to be in deep **** for leaving. I found out after lunch that I was supposed to stay, but they had already given the rest of the jury and the alternates some information so they just promoted the alternate. I didn't end up sitting on any jury and just went home after the day was over.

The case was actually interesting. The defendant had beaten up his girlfriend, but during the drunken rage he said something about how he was "going to kill her". Well they were trying to convict him of attempted murder and not just aggravated assault. I talked to the lawyer when I had his sons game next and he said, "Oh yeah. He got convicted of attempted murder. I did my best and made my case, but that's how it goes."

We've been watching the "Hunting Hitler" series. Pretty compelling stuff. I'm now pretty convinced he set up a deal with the US that he'd turn over Oppenheimer and crew to them for allowing his escape to Argentina.

I sat on a jury for a robbery, assault and attempted murder.
We found him guilty of robbery, interference with official acts & possession of burglary tools. Not guilty of attempted murder or assault. The cops only witness to that didn't even back up the cops story.

Good grief, we're chatty Kathys today.

It was several years ago that I realized "Holy crap, my grandma was married four times."
1)My biological grandfather (he left when she was pregnant with my dad)
2)The man I consider my grandpa. (Married when my dad was 11 months old, divorced right before I was born or a baby? He turned 92 this past Sunday)
3)Another gentleman I think she was married to for 5ish years? I was a toddler in the pictures from the ceremony. Think they divorced when I was 7ish.
4) My "step-grandpa". Married 10+ years until he passed.

Oh, here's a kicker. I didn't know my grandpa wasn't my biological grandfather until I was around 13. I happened to come across a list of important birthdates/anniversaries of someone's. (Maybe my grandma's?) It had my grandparents' anniversary as the December after my dad was born. Could happen, but still thought it was weird. Also, there was a baby pic of my dad with a different last name on the back. But neither of these was how I found out. There was something on the news about one of the countries in the Baltic. (Albania?) My dad mentions "Grandpa has some Albanian in him." I respond "Cool. I've got some Albanian in me." Yeah. THAT'S when my dad told me.

I also had jury duty in Polk County. The only time I went through voir dire, I knew the alleged expert witness doctor.

When the lawyer asked if I could still be fair, I gave a hesitant “um, sure.” It wasn’t particularly honest but I was sure I would be bounced for my job.

I had gone to him when regular doc on vacay, and he had totally misread a radiologist’s report. Said I probably only had six months to live and he would send me to some buddy of his for a biopsy.

So after many tears and sleepless nights I consulted my aunt’s oncologist. He said the whole thing was dumb, he could visually tell I did not have what radiologist raised an issue about and was totally fine.

So I knew the doc was an idiot quack but did not want to poison the whole panel. I got kicked out so all was well.

Some of the guys in the Purdy thread have built him up to be the second coming of Peyton Manning or something.

I'm glad he was wrong. What a quack!

That's a weird way to find out, but they probably figured you were old enough to understand it and accept it.

There's way too much importance placed on biology IMO. The people that raise and love a child, grandchild, stepchild or foster child are what really matters.

I got summoned for jury duty while out-of-state at college. Got out of that one.

Also summoned for Douglas County. Never had to report.

Husband was summoned for Wapello couple of years ago...in thr middle of February. Yeah, that's a no go with basketball and state wrestling and the like. He was able to "serve" in April. He also never had to report.

Wow, I honestly wanted to respond winner or friendly for this but has so much going on. Will just say that I'm glad he was wrong and you are still here.

My family doesn't like to talk about important things much. Better to just ignore it or pretend it never happened.

I found out when I was about 10 that my older brother is actually my half brother. My mom had him out of wedlock. My staunchly Catholic mother. My dad married my mom when my bro was about 4. My sister came along a year later. Then me 3 years later. I don't think my brother knows anything about his dad. My dad adopted him officially when they got married. He had my mom's last name until then. He's always just been my brother though.

Then top that off. When I was 21 I was on a short road trip with my dad. We were driving past Cedar Rapids. The City of 1000 Smells! He starts telling how he used to live in CR with my uncle. They lived in an apartment above a bar, got drunk most nights and crashed. Nice. They worked at a warehouse and both drove trucks on long trips as well. I knew he was a truck driver for a while but not that he lived in CR or any of that. The kicker was, my dad said he was married for about 6 months back then as well. They got married, he went on a long trucking trip and when he came back she had basically drained their bank account. They got divorced shortly after. Never heard about this in my life until then.

Oh, and also my mom has an older half sister that I've never met. She was born out of wedlock to my staunch Catholic grandmother. My grandfather didn't ever embrace her so she was out of the picture. Literally out of the picture. Never saw her in any family portraits. Just pictures of my grandfathers 5 kids. I have no idea how much older she was or where she grew up or anything. Maybe with her dad? No idea.
I never heard about her until a FEW YEARS AGO! My sister and sister in law were talking about it and they assumed I had heard a long time ago. Uh, no. No one tells me anything.

Thinking about this, it would be odd if one of us was on a jury with a different RTTer as one of the lawsuits. I only 1-2 names so I could actually know the person somewhat and not know it. Likely ones would be CG knifing someone, BDK for dope, pants for tax evasion.
