RECRUITING: Some notes entering the January cycle....

No grad transfer QB would realistically expect a promise to start. But I bet most grad transfers would want a good chance to start. And, frankly, no matter if Kempt gets the extra year or not, I would think the chances of them starting would be pretty small.

Gotta disagree with that. Thin without much returning experience and just Noland who is just a sophomore. Plenty of opportunity at the QB position for a transfer to compete to start.

Yes. And that's why the NCAA making a timely decision on Kempt is so critical. If they take too long then any decent grad transfer QB will have gone elsewhere. Competing with one guy is no big deal, but trying to leapfrog both Kempt and Noland (potentially without the benefit of spring practice reps)? Tall order for any QB.
Although you could see some more grad transfers after spring ball.

That's true. I hadn't considered that. Although a grad transfer coming in after spring ball would have considerable ground to make up to be ready to contribute in the fall. That's a lot of missed reps. I'd much prefer the whole thing be settled one way or another by March.

I just looked this up, to get an idea of how long it might take. It took NCAA until April to make final decision on Ott, although I believe there was an appeal of the original decision.

I feel like there were multiple appeals.

I wouldn't assume anything about Re-al based on this. They may just like this kids skill set. If we don't end up getting a JuCo or grad transfer QB, Re-al may need to play as a true freshman. That could leave Brock with a chance to redshirt, giving them some class separation.

I'm betting that Re-al will be given a full shot at QB before being reassigned. The kid's got talent.

Yeah he was in the elite 11 quaterback, he could very well have the best arm on the roster

total shot in the dark here but maybe the staff always knew Re-Al wasn’t a big 12 qb but is a good enough athlete and they didn’t want to lose his commitment by recruiting another QB until he got on campus.
I'm thinking more like they aren't optimistic about Kempt coming back or getting a worthwhile transfer. If they think Re-Al can be utilized in special situations on a limited playbook, they could play him as a true freshman and redshirt Purdy, effectively putting them in different classes.
