Been sick this week so I’m a little late getting started on this stuff, but wanted to post a few things I’ve compiled the past few days leading into the January cycle before the February signing period.

*** It sounds like the wide receiver spot will be Iowa State’s biggest focus throughout the month of January when it comes to the 2018 class. Four-star Joseph Scates seems to be the staff’s top choice at the position at this point, but I think there’s some stuff he has to clear up on his end before anything official can be done. I imagine we’ll start to get some more names in the coming weeks, but Scates will be the big one to keep an eye on in the immediate future.

*** I expect Iowa State to take at least one more defensive back in the 2018 class. Three-star safety Avonta Crim has locked in an official visit for the weekend of Jan. 27.

*** I’m sure a few more top names will come out in the next week or so, but those are just the primary 2018 things I’ve got right now. Iowa State still has 2-4 spots left in the class after signing 18 in the early period so still work to be done.

*** Other than that, the rest of the energy in January will be spent on making a serious push forward with the 2019 class. The Cyclones are already off to a fast start there compared to past classes and I imagine that will only continue in the coming weeks. I hope to have more on the efforts in 2019 over the weekend or early next week.

As always, recruiting is very fluid so stay tuned.

Getting Scates would be awesome. Seems like we're going after a lot of WR's

Scates looks like a talent that could play next fall. Biggest issue I see is with the early signing period the pool has shrunk and if he does clear things up the big boys may come out of the woodwork.

What have you heard about safety Nikko Hall? 247 has him visiting on the 19th.

Interesting. I would have not have thought WR would have been at the top of the list. I guess you always need playmakers and we’ll likely need to replace both Butler and Eaton after next year.

I think Scates is just one of the better talents still available, and one that we have been after all along. All you can do is ride it out and hope for the best in the end. That's all you can ask for really.

Wouldnt surprise me if they brought in a juco or transfer QB as well

I think there are rumblings of this already. The g-transfer from Washington visited before the bowl, I also think there is talk of the Burrows kid from Ohio st. I think that is probably the reference breadcrumbs that Chris and Charter talked about without too much detail....

Please don't feed my curiosity. I'm way too neurotic as it is.

I think its going to be very difficult to get a grad transfer QB unless you can guarantee them they will start. They are transferring for a reason.
I am not sure I agree, if the kid was way down the depth chart at the old school, they may just be looking for a fresh start and to compete, plus imo with every team there is a injury or failed drug test that comes into the equation were you need your backup ready to go.... I don't think anyone can promise a start, because you never know what will happen....

I'd guess that the key question for a grad transfer QB would be whether Kempt gets his 6th year. I don't think any of them would look at Noland as a redshirt sophomore and be worried about the competition (not a slight on Noland, I just think that most grad transfers are going to believe that they have a leg up on a younger, fairly inexperienced guy).

No one can guarantee a start for a transfer. The kid at tOSU may not fit into the plan there. It happens. Guys get recruited over, maybe a step slower or short on some other metric their coaching staff is looking for. It is pretty clear that Manning can get the most out of what a QB has to offer after watching Kempt manage games this year. Most of these guys are looking for a place to go where they can get a new start and showcase what they can do.

I know Manning is OC, but I would say the 'get the most' out of the QB comes back to Jim Hofher should get more credit....

In Joe Burrow's case, and I could be wrong, he was the backup when he broke his throwing hand in fall camp and missed the first 4 or so weeks of the season. When he came back he was third on the depth chart. The hand break may have just sped up him moving down the depth chart.

Yes. And that's why the NCAA making a timely decision on Kempt is so critical. If they take too long then any decent grad transfer QB will have gone elsewhere. Competing with one guy is no big deal, but trying to leapfrog both Kempt and Noland (potentially without the benefit of spring practice reps)? Tall order for any QB.
