Coaching Carousel

Your playbook doesn't even have a flea flicker or a bootleg. They'll offer you $500,000 and not one cent more. And you'll have to win the fan vote, too.

Hey, I said it was just a sample! Bootleg, flea flickers, reverses, and direct snaps will all be in play.

Tennessee needs to call someone like Mack Brown. Esentially someone that has "recently" retired and has nothing careerwise to lose from taking the job and could do a decent job. Give them a couple years to lay low while the old-timer hires an OC or DC to take over in a couple years. Otherwise, nobody worth a crap is going to touch this toxic job and they'll have to take a flyer on some low level coach that is willing to take the job but will likely tank and get run out of town after 2-3 season. Then they are back to the same point and still toxic.

Given their current track record, do you think a coach will last that long?

I've only got one play, and it relies on having a god like running back, but it is a very very good play.

Mack Brown would be a great hire for TN. So it likely won't happen.

Of everything out there this just amazes me. How in the hell does ASU have to resort to Herm Edwards. And how in the hell did this even come up in the first place.

The ASU AD was Herm’s agent during his NFL coaching days. I think this is a case of cronyism on steroids. Herm is also apparently willing to keep the OC and DC currently on staff. Rumors are that Ray Anderson, the ASU AD, really likes his OC, Billy Napier. Herm may be coming in as a stopgap and give Napier some time to be groomed as the future head coach.

The overwhelming reaction to this reported hire from Sun Devil fans is very negative. Herm is ten years removed from coaching, nearly 30 years removed from college coaching when he was an assistant at San Jose St. He might win the press conference with his motivational speaker schtick, but you have to seriously question whether he has the chops to cut it in modern college coaching.

Everytime I see Herm on ESPN I think to myself "this man was allowed to coach an NFL football team?"

Tennessee AD John Currie made two hires while at K-State--Jeff Mittie and Bruce Weber--so both women and men's basketball coaches.

Sounds like Currie is out at Tenn.

Because of all things...he talked to Mike Leech.

Wow...just wow. Yeah, reports are coming out now that Currie was set to hire Leach and that was the last straw. Which is absolutely bizarre, because of everyone Tennessee had talked to so far Leach is arguably the best coach of the bunch.

To be fair, Tennessee fans absolutely do not know how good of a coach Leach is. They are stuck in the SEC SEC SEC bubble and have no appreciation for the programs he completely rebuilt at TTU or WSU.

If they even looked at his resume they would just see that he only had ONE season with over 9 wins. And that just wouldn't be good enough for mighty Rocky Top.

My only pause with Mike Leach at a more visible school like Nebraska or Tennessee is that he's never succeeded in a fishbowl environment. Lubbock and Pullman are both kind of off the map spots that don't have an illustrious football history where he can be as weird and crazy as he wants. I don't know how he would fare at a program with a higher national profile. It'd be interesting to see.

OH I agree. I think he would get run out of town at Nebraska unless he won the B1G West within the first two years. Which probably wouldn't happen. Leach needs an AD and a fanbase who is patient, realistic, and knows it takes more than a year to create a real winner. Leach is a fantastic coach, but he's not a guy that immediately starts bringing it superstar talent and can flip a program overnight. His system takes a while.
