Let's begin with a loose assumption that Campbell will be at ISU for at least another 4 years. That seems like a reasonable forecast, unless (1) he reaches unexpected heights then bolts for a bigger job asap (2) it’s an unmitigated disaster.

[(1) could be “good problem to have” situation; (2) would surprise me.]

Within that framework (and taking into account results in Year 1) what is your minimum, realistic hope for the next 4 seasons? Mostly, I’m curious about fans’ outlook/expectation regarding W/L, bowl qualification/success and how high ISU can climb in Big 12 pecking order, from 2017-20.

A clarification: I stated the focus on tangible stuff like W/L and postseason, which seems obviously obvious. I assume some wish-lists will include "stronger recruiting, better player development, noticeable progress" ... those are reasonable goals, but ultimately on-field results are the payoff.

Consistently winning 6-8 games with the occasional special year where a couple of breaks go our way and we get to 9-10 wins.

This is probably most realistic. It's just hard for me to see ISU has a consistent 10-11 win team. 6-8 win team with a 10-11 sprinkled in every 2 or so years. That consistency could get the recruits in to be that 10-11 win team .

I would say 10-11 wins is A LOT of wins every 2 years. It's a lot for any program but for a select few. I would state success as more in 9-10 wins every 4-5 years range and that would include 6-8 wins most other years with a 5 win season sprinkled in. Although, reading back through that I still think I'm being pretty optimistic. I know history isn't everything, but we have to build from what's been done before and it's a low bar to start from. Campbell or no Campbell it's going to be tough for ISU to be even that consistent. Maybe it's more realistic that every 5 years we get 2x5, 2x6, and 1x7-8 wins. Even that is a huge improvement from where we've been. But, like anything, who knows? I'm just hoping the atmosphere around the program stays fun and that the team stays competitive. I could live with that.

My expectations and what i think will happen are two diff things.. Given how we saw how close this team really was to getting 5-6 wins last year in year 1 with a make shift Oline and a lot of new players along with the best 2 recruiting classes back to back in recent memory and i feel getting to 6 wins is not unrealistic expectation every year with Campbell...

17: 5-6 wins, think we win 6
18: 6-7 wins, think we win 8+
19: 6-7 wins, think we win 7

3 bowl games in the next 4 years
2 bowl victories
1 8+ win season
Finish in the top 1/2 of the Big 12 once
1 first round draft pick
Multiple players drafted in a draft.

I like it..especially the drafted players my god our history is shameful.

I actually believe that 2018 will set up to be a season like we've not seen in 20 years. We return a ton in 2018.

6-8 wins per year and bowl games.
Hitting 9 or 10 wins in a season every 4-5 years would be outstanding.

That said, he won't stay after 8 wins.

That's ok..Bring on Jason Candle. Seems to have not missed a beat at Toledo..is a good offensive mind..and is getting some nice pub after taking over for CMC and is a CMC protege.

An 18 win season? Somebody's planning on the playoffs happening and a national championship in the next 5 years! :jimlad

While it seems Ames, IA is one of the most difficult places in the nation to create a national football power, somehow Bill Snyder went to Manhattan, KS and did just that. I don't think Snyder got rafts of 5-star kids, but he assembled a staff that has been able to consistently get the absolute best out of their talent.

At this point, CMC is still pretty much a mystery. I will say I am impressed with his recruiting successes so far, inasmuch as he is starting from scratch. That said, I would be cautiously optimistic that Iowa State can become a .500 football team very soon, and one that is at least in the sports media conversation(s). Can it get better? Sure it can....but we as fans have been hoping for that scenario for a long, long time.

I agree with everything here, but I think the length of his stay more so depends on how long Meyer is at tOSU if he starts having real success here.
