Here's how bad Directv is hurting...

Like so many others I said F it, I'm tired of paying $150 a month for Directv. I called and canceled our service yesterday. Our contract is up at the end of this month anyway. I went through with cancellation. Plan to utilize the Vue and Amazon since we already have Prime.

Directv just called me and offered to give me the exact same channel lineup I have for $56 a month. Had that been it I wouldn't have questioned it but they also threw in NFL Sunday Ticket, HBO and Skinamax for a year free, and $200 visa gift card. I assumed it meant I would have to resign a contract, nope. Still month to month.

Having 2nd thoughts now, can you guys share what you spend a month on average for Vue and Roku/Amazon? Thanks

If you want HBO and Sunday Ticket, keep Directv if that's the price. You'll pay $45 for Vue (most likely) and then HBO will add $15.

IMO, it really comes down to how much you watch tv. If you're a heavy tv watcher and you'd have to upgrade your internet, it would probably be best to take the Directv offer. If you're not, especially during the summer months, it would probably be best to go the streaming route.

Does sound like you got a great deal. When I cancelled DirecTV 3 years ago, I tried to get them to match a deal a friend of mine got, they refused so I cancelled.
There are going to be cases like this were DTV or Dish is cheaper than "cord cutting" but I don't believe they will do this for everyone, nor do I believe this will last for you. I'd be surprised if you're still paying $56/mo a year from now, but good for you if you are.

Here's what I pay:
PS Vue: $35/mo
Netflix: We use my in-law's account, so kind of cheating here
Amazon Prime: $99/year (Really don't watch much from Amazon and I've had Prime for a long time for the shipping)
Internet: $38/mo (I'd have this whether I streamed or had a cable subscription)

Total: $81.25/month

I have had Direct TV for 8+ years now and have been thinking of switching to something cheaper. I see the live TV claim and was wondering for you folks who have the Vue if it is live TV or if it is like watching Netflix with a menu.

Once you switch, you'll wonder why it took you so long. I've had PS Vue for almost a year and love it.

Wow, what speeds/data cap do you get for only $38?

DirecTV offered me a similar deal last year when I tried to cancel, and I took it. The only thing I wasn't offered was the no contract thing. After 10 months, my bill went from $56 to $83. After 12 months, it was back to $130. I called and cancelled again, they offered me the world again, this time I told them no dice, just send me the boxes. I'm out.

If they could simply say "here's how much it will be per month and it's going to be like that for a long time", say three years, I would stay with them. I'm tired of having to call, negotiate, get special offers, etc. If my bill were $80/month, every month without fail, I wouldn't mess around with the streaming stuff. I'm paying about $45 a month for various streaming packages and an extra $10 to bump my internet up a level so it isn't saving me a ton of money, but if I want to shut one off, I log in and shut it off. If I want to add something, I log in and add something. I know exactly how much it will cost and I am in complete control over what programming I do and don't get.

I prefer the simplicity of DirecTV and they do offer a good product, but I'm done screwing around with them.

How is streaming with the 40 mb connection with Century link? I've upgraded mediacom from 60mb to 100 mb and vue has worked great the past week... I switched over to VUE 2 weeks ago and the first week was pretty choppy / buffering a lot even while i have the 100 mb connection.

Hoping it continues to work well... but very annoyed the first week.

Take the deal. I've been thinking of switching back as an ATT customer I can get $50/month with my current plan or $25/month if I upgrade my wireless to unlimited data. I really miss having A&E and History channel. And the DVR is so much better. This was going to include a genie and 3 minis, plus I could watch it on any device. To me PSVue is/was great for cutting my cost, but if I could have the luxury of DTV for the same price, I'd take it in a heartbeat.

I canceled last week and the lady was down to $29 a month with a one year contract. I would have lost the sports pack but otherwise kept the same channels. I still canceled and am using PS Vue and Netflix.

My friends ask me all the time about my experience.
First, I tell them that if they can negotiate a similar deal with DirecTV or Dish, go for it. Or if they are happy with what they are paying, no reason to make a switch. This is the easiest, most hands off approach and it is what everyone is most comfortable using.

Second, I recommend upgrading internet speed, their wireless router to 5G and maybe buying 1 console (Roku, AppleTV, FireTV), not just the cheap stick version. It does require a small upfront cost (maybe $100-$150) to give yourself a more seamless experience.
I see this as a critical step, especially if you aren't particularly "technical". If you rely on the internet provider's router, you'll have less control and more frustration in my opinion.

Third, I'm very clear that there's still some level of patience that's required to stream.
Yes, I've been watching an ISU game and it buffers with 2 minutes left in a close game. It sucks but I'd estimate 95% of the time you'd never know the TV was streaming.

I cancelled about 3 months ago.... Directv told me they couldnt lower my price (about 150 per month) at all after calling them multiple times, talking to many different people, being on hold forever, and being switched from department to department. I had been with them 9 years. What a crapshow of customer service.

We use the Roku Premiere which works fairly well, but I would love to have the multiple shows view for NCAA FB season. Does anything besides the actual playstation offer this?

Go to the site below and actually start tracking your speeds. My dealings with Mediacom were an absolute **** show trying to get the 100mbps that I was paying for. After initial install I was maxing out at around 7mbps. First it was a router initially installed that couldn't handle the speed, then it was calling to have them turn on the 5 ghz wireless (2.4 maxed around 50 mbps), then it was having another couple techs come out and do nothing, etc. I finally ended up getting the speeds on the 5ghz but it constantly cut in and out even though the router was like 20 ft away. Nothing would stay connected on the 5ghz band even though my place was only 750 sq ft.

I switched over to CenturyLink again when I moved on a 40mbps plan and it has works worlds above what my Mediacom ever did. The router is sitting in the basement of a 2000 sq ft two story. The PS Vue hasn't missed a beat even upstairs in the bedroom.

As of right now I think only the PS4 supports this, but I would be shocked if it doesn't come to something like Amazon Fire TV sometime soon.

This is good to know. I'm about to switch to the same setup for about the same reason.

Side note: I hate speed test's beta site. I always try to go to the legacy site, and it kicks me back to the beta. I can't get the beta to auto detect the closest server. I always have to choose one and run it, then choose another and run it.
