Why was Monte off the ball all game

Morris isn't like Mason, or Tinsley - his game isn't crashing to the rim. He's NOT a physical player, and WVU is obviously a physical team. I think that may have been intentional on Prohm's part, although for a time (when Babb was driving) I thought we might be able to get some of their guys in foul trouble. Tough when Huggy goes 11 and 12 deep, though.

Having said that, it was beyond weird watching Burton bring the ball up. Kind of like watching an elephant go down a steep hill on roller skates. You don't want to see what happens, necessarily, but you can't look away, either - or you might miss something really spectacular.

Hard to get them in foul trouble when they didn't get called very often. I hate to blame the refs but cmon. We didn't help ourselves at all by missing shots especially in the first few minutes of the second half. Could have been up 10 if we would have come out of half on fire.

Three thoughts:

1. I noticed that Morris was getting open for some pretty nice passes and layups. It happened at Vanderbilt too. Perhaps that was part of the gameplan. I think we underestimate his ability to get open without the ball.

2. Weiler-Babb is fast. And so is Burton. They often slashed through the press pretty well. Our problems seemed to be once we got the ball in the frontcourt.

3. Morris can play plenty physical. Have you seen him in years past laying on the ground after getting clobbered on a layup? He took a beating last year. I like a more healthy Morris as we head to the end of the season.

For some of you criticizing Prohm for not using Monte more...... were you at the game? I focused in on Monte a ton and Carter was denying the crap out of him. Monte couldn't even get open to get the ball on end line or sideline out of bounds. Never seen anyone that could do that to Monte for that long. Burton had to inbound it to Matt for the most part. And when Monte did try to penetrate, how many lay ups or fouls drawn did you see him get? I don't fault Prohm for going with Burton. He did have 10 assists. Don't think Monte has had that in any of his last 3 games, has he? Just wish Deonte didn't have 5 turnovers and would have caught a Matt a few more times. Just wish we didn't have KU up next to try to get a bounce back game.

At the risk of sounding like a broken record, I'm again glad someone saw the same game I did. It was clear that part of the WVU plan was to keep the basketball out of MM's hands and force someone else to bring it up. It worked well because Burton was bringing it up most of the time. That makes me cringe as others have said but, it was a pretty good plan by huggs!!

We have too many fans that want to blame Prohm for everything. Let the man get his guys here next year and see what he does

That's the main problem throughout the season.

ISU suck, Prohm is the most pathetic coach just like Paul Rhoades and I have been telling a lot of idiots on this site, y'all in denial. Prohm suck, ISU and big 12 basketball is too big for Prohm. Useless coach.

You grammar suck.

Yeah I know and English is like my third language, but I still got As in my comp I and II, so I am pretty happy with that. How many languages do you speak/write genius? I bet one, You can't even speak the illigal immigrants language, yet you want them to wipe your @$$. get out of here!

1) I speak 1 language, English. Good for you on the multiple languages. I don't have a need for it.

2) I can spell illegal.

3) Thank you for calling me a genius.

Random thought regarding Monte and I didn't see anything in the post game comments regarding this but... Maybe Monte was a little under the weather last night? That was my knee jerk reaction when Prohm sat him for so long in the first half and then again in the second? He just didn't seem to have the normal bounce in his step from the get go. Not trying to make excuses but just throwing out a potential angle that is definitely a possibility.

Not sure what your definition of "really well" is, but in 3 minutes he had 1 turnover, 1 rebound and went 0-1. I don't think that's really well by many people's standards.
With the way WVU plays, this was not a good game for him to get in. He can't handle the ball well enough and isn't quite mature enough yet to handle the physicality of WVU.

Everyone keeps saying "This wasn't a good match up for him to be able to play". EVERY GAME someone says it. If it's true why the heck did we even recruit him if it is a bad match up for every opponent we play. You can't sit out all game except for 3 minutes and expect to have the confidence to contribute anything significant. Give the guy at least 10 minutes a game..

My anxiety level increases when Burton has the ball. Wish there is a way to teach him finesse just to calm my nerves

That's a good observation. that game last night had "Monte 40 minutes iron man" written all over it.

I only said it for that game, not every game. And I said it for the WVU game because their style of play is one of a kind. I don't think Young can handle the ball well enough under pressure and pass out of it safely, YET.
As for the other games, I was all in on giving him as many minutes as possible. And for pretty much every remaining game, except @WVU (unless he improves his ball handling and passing skills by then).

True ... in that case Morris just needs to go get the ball.
