I spent 3 summers working with the scouts and the USFS fixing portage trails in the Boundary Waters (better summer gig than teaching) and was intrigued by the idea of winter camping. Winter camping was a true test of will against the elements. The beauty of the wilderness can really be appreciated in the silence of winter. I recommend that everyone try it once.
