2016 Rio Summer Olympics

I got stuck watching the Today show with my wife and mother in law this morning. Man they stretch to try to make a back story to every single event and athlete. In the same breath they are congratulating Coburn for the steeplechase bronze and switching right into Biles's "failure" bronze. They also seem dead set to show as much of Leslie Jones acting like a jack ass in the stands as possible.

That ending really frustrated me. I realize it was perfectly legal, but she really didn't outrun her. Just my opinion...

I am with you on this. My argument against that finish is that when they put the first part of the torso rule in they were thinking the torso would be vertical not horizontal to the track. Felix body crossed first, but Miller's torso touched the line first.

She did half stumble and then lunge for the finish I believe, just don't think we want to start rewarding people who dive. Can you imagine the backlash if Gatlin had dove and beat Bolt the night before.

The red vertical lines represent the finish line vs. the time listed along the bottom. So this shows the winner was .06 seconds ahead.
Ok I get it: there are (3) vertical lines and each corresponds to the finish of 1st 2nd 3rd with the bottom time line indicating their official finish time.

Thought they said the winning time was 49.44. I don't understand where the finish line is here. I know it's supposed to be whenever the first part of the torso breaks the line but not sure where the finish line is.

You are correct, it looks like 49.44 is the winning time and you can see the .01 divisions on the time line.

I'm not convinced the dive/fall was even helpful for her, it definitely slowed her down, I think Felix could maybe have won had she leaned more aggressively at the finish line.

This is completely possible. To the my naked eye it looked like it helped her. Maybe Sports Science can get to the bottom of it for us.

I guess my thought is that it didn't help her any more than a normal lean would have, she was so out of energy it was really more of a controlled fall than a dive.

But you gotta do what you gotta do to win so good on her.

Great finish to the woman's 400. In the photo finishes, what determines the end line?

I guess when I look at this image I look at where her hips/bell button are. She clearly benefited from not running the final meter and a half. What she did is within the rules, I just happen to think the rules are wrong.

Honestly if you are going to pick a part of the body to use to judge crossing the line it should be the hips or belly button. As neither of those can go anywhere without the whole body moving.

I agree. While it looked unorthodox, i don't think it helped.
If diving was quicker, wouldn't they have giant foam pit at the finish line to catch all the finishers as they dive for the finish?

I was thinking it would be similar to diving into first base in baseball, but the key is the torso needing to get to the finish line (not the outstretched arm to first base).

...AND under the glove of the first baseman. I mean, I can see the advantage there.

But that's not the same as a race where you're trying to run faster than the other person. Emphasis on RUN faster.

Technically the point of the race is to cross the finish line first. Nobody says you have to run to do it. Running is just the fastest way to get there.

Their coverage is garbage. I also love their transitions from real news to Lauer going parasailing or something. "5 people dead in Louisiana in the state's worst flooding since Katrina. Now back to you, Matt, on the best place to get ceviche on Copacabana beach."

I saw the race and didn't even bat an eye or questioned it. It is getting way more press than it should. If you have competitively ran the open 4 you know exactly what that girl was experiencing and it was very evident on that stride where her leg buckled and she fell forward. Any track athlete knows you lean at the finish not dive, it is a faster way to get your chest across the line. Unfortunately the American lost and that is why we are all up in arms about it.

Actually, the nationality of it has nothing to do with it, at least in my case. I also mentioned in my very first post on the topic that it was not an illegal move. And I'm not up in arms...more like, I'm disappointed in the dive.

However, for those of you who say "the point is to win...it doesn't matter how", my only thought is that you have a different view of competition than I do. Not better, not worse. Just...different.
