Menards rumor

I just heard this too. That Staples is going to move and Menards will build where both the K-Mart and Staples buidldings are now. I'll check and see where my wife got the info.

I think Menards and Ames would be better off if they built out on Dayton between Theisens and the salvage lot.
That area is one heckuva flood plain. They'd have to really work at that.

I just don't think that lot (K-Mart and Staples) is big enough but maybe it is. With the store and the lumber yard, it doesn't seem big enough for a full size Menards store unless they built into the parking lot (which I doubt since they share that lot with the movie theater and the potentially new staples so they need all of the spaces they can get).

At one point I thought Olde Main or someone like that wanted to have a large banquet room at that KMart complex.

Were you thinking of Hickory Park? HP built a banquet building up the road from the old K-Mart but they closed it a couple years ago and put it on the market.

No, pretty sure it was an Olde Main venture because I was shocked (I don't care for their beer).

Possibly in the Ames People group on Facebook? That's where I heard what you wrote, too.

I heard Staples is taking over Sports Authority's spot and Menards was moving to KMart. Source is someone who seems to always be in the know about Ames stuff but also may have gotten that from Ames People.

The old K-Mart building owner still has K-Mart on the hook for the lease for a couple more years. I suppose it is possible Menards is in talks to buy them out but I haven't heard anything recently. Besides, I thought Menards was boycotting opening new stores while a certain current president is in office.

Then they failed miserably or your thought was wrong. They have been expanding a lot.

Menards has bought some land in Ames, but no date or timing has been set. John Menard is doing his every 4 year routine – (not planning any new stores until after the election). After this next wave of stores (through next Spring), they only have (3) replacement stores on the books for all of next year.

Doesn't Aldi also want a newer, bigger building somewhere?

I had forgotten the Sports Authority part, but this is exactly what I heard as well.
