Frank Vogel is out. Disappointing, but not terribly surprising. Larry Bird draws heavily on his experience as a player, and he's even admitted publicly that a team usually starts to tune a head coach out after a few years. No idea where the Pacers go next - probably a more offensive minded coach to install the uptempo pace that Bird wanted them to play at this year. But you have to have the right personnel to do that, and the Pacers have a goofy roster that can't really grind it out or run it wide open consistently.

No doubt Vogel lands another head coach job for next season. He's a player's coach with a proven track record of fielding good defensive teams.

Wow that's surprising. I thought Vogel maxed out the Pacers talent pretty much every year he was there. There isn't a year you can look at their roster and think, yeah they should have done more. Even in 2014 when he seemed to lose the team down the stretch, they weren't more talented than Miami. Was this just based on his offensive shortcomings? He wasn't without his flaws but I thought everything else about him far outweighed those.

I think it was more philosophical differences than anything else. Bird had made it pretty clear before the start of last season that he wanted the team to play a smaller and faster brand of basketball (like everyone else in the league is trying to do). Vogel scrapped that pretty early in the season in favor of what he knows and is comfortable coaching. Remember the Paul George as a stretch four storyline? Yeah, that experiment lasted all of about a month. Chalk this one up to management and coach not being on the same page.

Bird better have a strong hire already in mind then, any candidates been mentioned yet? I wonder where Vogel ends up, the Knicks or Kings jobs aren't ones I would be in a hurry to land, maybe he sits out a year and waits for more openings next year.

I already saw Jeff Hornacek as being a coach of interest for the Pacers. Bird also said he won't pursue Kevin McHale.

Vogel to Houston is getting some traction. They almost signed him prior to him getting the Pacers job.

Hornacek seems like a strong possibility considering the style of play he installed in Phoenix. As I understand it several names were brought up by reporters in the presser today, and only one - McHale - was definitively ruled out. That leaves the usual list of retreads as options. Mike D'Antoni I guess, although I feel like the league caught up with and passed him by a couple years ago. Nate McMillan, Mark Jackson, Dave Blatt, Brian Shaw..none of them really mesh with Bird's small ball edict.

If they're going with a guy with head coaching experience, Hornacek makes the most sense. But we'll see.

Forgot Houston was still open, that's not a bad job. Just have to deal with some unlikable players but there is talent there and a good front office.

Vogel and Joerger are both excellent coaches , I really don't get either of those moves

I don't care how you feel about the Cavaliers, and yes, they're probably going to get crushed by either Golden State or San Antonio, but they're 8-0 in the playoffs, and that's pretty damn impressive.

Why would they get crushed? They took golden state to 6 games last year without Love or Irving.

Knew this was possible. Have a bad feeling Spurs are going to lose this series giving GS a clear path to return trip to finals.
