Niang NBA chances

The Spurs would make sense. He's very similar offensively/crafty like Boris Diaw and if there is one coach that would make him eat, drink, and sleep defense it would be Pop. Who knows? Maybe it could work.

The Spurs would make no sense because they're one of if not the best defensive team in the league. Georges would be amongst the worst athletes in the NBA.

Ridiculously good offensive college player. At the very best he's an average college defender against significantly less skilled guys.

Georges should go make money and learn the game from other coaches in Europe for a while and then come back to Ames to coach for 30+ years.

Niang will get plenty of chances. You don't see his bundle of skills come along too often. I think it's more likely that he never sticks anywhere, but he could absolutely find a niche somewhere. Atlanta, Indiana, and Memphis come to mind as places I think he could stick if things break right.

I'd enjoy reading your reasoning.

Niang is too slow in rotation proving to be a liability on the defensive end of the floor. While he has played more of a shifting 4 here, his size would be a 3 in the league where he wouldn't last. Whether due to an inability to back down for close looks off the post move at that level, the poor handle and knack for turnovers, or given that he's not a shooter, it's pretty self-explanatory.

I don't see Georges as a NBA guy but then again there has always been a spot on the bench for guys like Mark Madsen, Brian Scalabrine, and Steve Novak. Georges personality and his "safe" factor give me hope that he can make a lot of money while never really playing much in the league.

You wrote Niang in the first word of the first sentence, but seems like most of it was about Nader.

Except Nader rotates on defense, doesn't play as a shifting 4, has averaged less turnovers per game this season, and doesn't rely on post-up moves to get inside because he can actually drive due to his quickness. And considering his shooting the last few games, he's peaking at the right time.

Niang's TOrate 15.8, Nader's 19.9. Niang also has an 18.5 Assist Rate, Nader's is 8.1. Niang also rebounds better on both ends. Not to mention Niang is a better outside shooter this year, and obviously over their careers too.

Interesting perspective.

Honestly, Nader's got a better shot.

^^^^ Abdel Nader.

Shouldn't you be practicing for tomorrow night's game?

Agreed on the outside shooting. As far as rebounds, it'd be expected for Niang to average more given his positioning on the floor for both ends. Same with assist, we run a lot of our offense through Georges so those numbers should be higher.

I'm not so sure the NBA values assists in SF as far as draft stock goes seeing most 3's aren't brought in for distribution. Niang has at least 5 other SF's in front of him, according to multiple boards, and they're all averaging about 3 APG or less this season with Valentine being the exception.

McDermott is an elite shooter which Georges is not, he's also historically bad at everything else. He's putting up all time low rebound, assist, block and steal rates. Niang is a much better passer, but similarly flawed defensively.
Doubt teams will draft Niang for his shooting ability.. He is the type of guy that can run/facilitate an entire offense. McBuckets can't do that.

It's comedy to read everybody's opinion on why Niang cannot make the NBA. If there is truly interest in the Spurs part, I can't think of a better coach or system to be in for Niang to have a shot in the NBA. Pop is pretty much the best coach in the league and probably the best coach on the planet at this point in time. If anybody can utilize his strenghths and minimize his weaknesses it's Pop and the Spurs.

If you ever watch them you will see their spacing is great and they move the ball really well. They are a fun team to watch because they play so well as a team. Plus I don't think Niang would be called on to be a big time reboubder. Frankly, they wouldn't need him to be.

He would never get called for traveling in the NBA. Georges Niang without the traveling calls would be unstoppable.

Teaching someone an acceptable level of NBA defense is easier than teaching Niang's offensive skills. He would be a project for sure, but the NBA drafts riskier projects all the time.
