Ok, I know what map then.
Each of the numbers is an actual physical spotter report.
The contour shading is just statistical modeling by the GIS based on those reports. When there are few reports, the contours are kinda funky, but as more and more reports come in, there's more to work with and become more plausible.
Thanks. I was looking at where the sheds are and it first showed 11 inches and now its about 4. I'm sitting in the 11 inches. Have had highway 18 closed for awhile don't know if accident or what, but I still get ambulance texrts and didnt get any.
The other issue is sometimes the reports are delayed, or an old one doesn't get updated on time, so there will be an odd ball low number mixed in an area of much higher.
For all the fancy crap we have, snowfall reports still really haven't advanced from "dude walks out and sticks a ruler in the snow."
What keeps old dude from sticking it in a snow bank then? How many spotters generally make up the map? A couple per county?
Nothing stops someone from inaccurately measuring snow, thus, generally speaking when looking at reports you should have greater faith in ones that say spotter, media, or NWS employee rather than something just reported by the public. In theory those first three should all be measuring the right way.

Trained spotters and law enforcement are the main ones.
Lots of law enforcement reports and county emergency manager reports come in.
Most public reports don't make it if they don't have a spotter ID number.
They'll make sure they blend in if they don't have one.

This is my first year of homeownership, and I figured I would shovel and be fine. I shoveled in high school and don't remember it being bad; either I was in a lot better shape in high school, or I have a bad memory because that ******* sucked. An investment in a snowblower might be in my future
haha, first year here too. We got a shovel today. We didn't get snow boots so I told DH that without boots, I'm not helping shovel. I predict a snowblower will be purchased soon. I'm convinced shoveling isn't that bad. It probably is.
Yep, after a few years of shoveling I caved and bought a snowblower this year. Just went out and did my drive and my back is thanking me already. Especially with that wet & heavy stuff we have today.
Nope. **** that ****. Never doing that again. Madison for the in-laws thanksgiving. I better get something really good (if you know what i mean) for taking 9 his to do an 4.5 hour drive.

That was me last year (first winter as a homeowner). There was a nice layer of ice beneath the snow this morning so I was very glad to have a blower this time around.
