Rosenfels as Head Coach?

My Son and I were chatting about when the time would come that a new Head Football Coach would needed we both agreed that who ever the hire it had to bring a level of excitement much like the Basketball program did a few years back, I mentioned Sage Rosenfels. It could be magic like when the Hoiberg was ask to become the cyclones Head Basketball Coach. (Former star Cyclone player, former NFL QB, with an offensive mindset).
We agreed that, like Fred he would have to hire wisely to look for that experienced guy ( like Doc Sadler was ) to help him for a few years. That said we ran with the idea and were placing new coaches every where. Like Seneca Wallace Offensive coordinator/QB coach...Troy Davis Running Back Coach..Ben Bruns Offensive Line Coach...ETC.

Now that you get my drift...thoughts??

They'll be working on how they can use their defense to contain Baylor & TCU & TT. They're preparing their defense against their offenses. So we should run something that they haven't spent weeks fine-tuning their defense to do. Make them implement a completely different game plan against us and we might have a chance.

You can try to argue that point, but I've been saying it and everyone just keeps pointing out the Walden and Criner years...nevermind that during those years the other teams in the conference were using running offenses. Nevermind that Georgia Tech hasn't missed a bowl game since 1996, but hey...you and I are wrong evidently.

Everybody is just super salty about how terrible the last few seasons have been.

I think it's a bad idea, but I'd try not to get personal about it.

The AD banked on his name recognition to get fans to buy in and his ability to sell recruits on why Colorado would be a good fit. This failed spectacularly. While Embree may have loved his alma mater and been a good NFL player, he was completely overwhelmed by the challenge of rebuilding a football program in a P5 conference.

The thing is, Jon Embree had a WAY better resume to be a head coach in a major conference than Sage Rosenfels does. Embree had been a coach at Colorado for nearly a decade in the 90's, with another decade of experience at other Pac 12 programs and the NFL. Loved the school. But he was in no way prepared to be the head coach at Colorado.

Sage Rosenfels has none of that experience. I agree, I'd love to have him back at ISU as a broadcaster, or QB coach, or something in that capacity. He could even make a fantastic head coach some day. But the odds of him failing as ISU's next HC are overwhelming. ISU has way too many forces working against it (location, tradition, money, etc) to turn the keys over to someone who has literally never run a practice, or recruited, or assembled a staff before.

I might sound crazy, but I'd have to disagree with this. Jon was going to turn them around, just he had terrible two years but many of his recruits are starters for the team now. I know he recruited their starting QB and he is decent. I know CU had the highest grades and graduation rates for football players when he was there too. I think he just needed a former coach that could act as his assistant and he probably could've been better. I think they fired him too quickly.

i don't think Sage would be a good hire though. I love the man but he couldn't turn us around and doesn't have the know how currently to coach.

This. The thing is, a guy can be very knowledgable about football and bleed hometown colors, but the learning curve for a college football head coach is tough. You're a CEO, you deal with the personalities of 18-22 year old men, you need a refined salesman skill set. Sage is not nearly proven. I cannot believe that this thread has gone on this long.

Which is exactly one of the reasons that I wouldn't mind Sage coming in. Coaches with "resumes" means that they have been brought up in the standard program environment and have taken on the tendencies of their mentors and they aren't going to be willing to throw that out of the window at ISU. We need someone that hasn't been conditioned and doesn't fall back on "that's how we did it here" and "that's how my old HC so and so did it". We need a singularly unique or innovative approach to the coaching job here if we ever want to be anything more than a 2-3 win a year team.

I don't know if Sage has these kind of ideas but that's what I'm looking for. Completely out of the box.

Honestly, the next head coach should have no previous ties to Iowa state football. This program is like a disease. Don't bring in a Paul Rhoads that was on a previous losing staff here. Don't bring in a player that was underneath that staff. He had a nice season his senior year. Compare that to a Scott Frost who's known nothing but national titles and super bowls since he started college 20 years ago. That's the type of influence you want injected into your program.

Maybe the guy in section 12 row 26 seat 7 will coach against Oklahoma State! It makes about the same amount of sense.

Do you find it "dumb" that most seem to enjoy the banter? Do you find it dumb that people agree or disagree with the chatter but aren't critical of others for an opinion? Do you find it dumb that you feel you have to post that "this is the dumbest thread ever" yet you added to it? OR do you find that you are the "dumbest" to have posted that this is the dumbest post ever" now that is just dumb....
