Devlyn Cousin transferring

Just another reason in a long list why we shouldn't be switching to a 3-4 IMO.

I haven't really heard a good reason to switch to it yet. Not with our personnel anyway.

Tucker is a nose guard who can be successful in a 3-4 (really a 3-3 with a nickel). We always seem to have depth problems on the defensive line. We have a couple linebackers in Peters and Jay Jones who can come off the end well. A 3-3 matches up well personnel wise against spread teams, so most of the teams in the Big 12. Depending on how often you blitz and where it can be hard to run against.

There's a few reasons, five to be exact.

You know that Lucy/Charlie Peanuts avatar thing you have going.......you will be Charlie when Rhoads exceeds expectation this year and returns for another season next year. What kind of fan hopes for the coach to be fired? So many F***ed up posters here, yourself included. Why would you ever want to willfully hope and predict for your team's demise? You must be young and of the entitlement era within our society. Good luck to you as you will likely fall dreadfully short in achieving your aspired goals in life. Pathetic.

Well, aren't you fun. I'm in no way hoping that CPR fails, but I have eyes and a brain and it's pretty obvious he's in over his head. If you want to keep your blind optimism going, I've got some ocean front property in Arizona to sell you.

Please you could say every coach Iowa State has had since Johnny Majors or Earl Bruce have been in over their heads. At least we have an Iowan who loves the city, the school and the program.

And you forgot Rob Garcia, Vernell Trent and Darius White. We will be fine.

I heard garcia had jumped him also.

This is whole thing seems off. Go through the worst stretch of practice and quit? Burn a year with no more practice? He will be extremely rusty. There has to be other reasons here since he said he is going elsewhere next year. Even being bumped to third string, it's better to practice and stay with the team and use those benefits then just quit.

This is weird, especially if he intends to transfer and play somewhere else, as opposed to just quitting football altogether. Keep playing, get your reps, then transfer and play at the same time you otherwise would have. Better yet, work hard and maybe create an opportunity for your self to play before deciding. He's not very far removed from a spot on the two-deeps with mostly talented but unproven guys ahead of him.

Reason #1 is that terrible Forever commercial they put out.

Hope you have a spouse that is a mirror image of yourself and is constantly telling you about your flaws and "shortcomings".

Your negativity is at a whole new level. Do you EVER quit ********?

These players below left or were asked to leave but would have eligibility left for this fall:

2011 (8) - Donald Smith, Teddy Lampkin, Quinton Pompey, Ja'Quarias Daniels, Devin Lemke, Rob Standard, Devondrick Nealy, Tad Ecby

2012 (8) - Adam Pavlenko, Collin Bevins, Charlie Rodgers, T.J. Mutcherson, P.J. Harris, Duaron Williams, Damein Lawry, Devlyn Cousin

2013 (6) - D.A. Williams, Trevor Hodge, Bryan Ajumobi, Alex Leslie, Alton Meeks, Kamari Syrie

2014 (2) - Devron Moore, Martinez Syria

2015 (2) - De'Amontae Jackson, Kendall Williams

I don't think those numbers are that much out of line with most schools.

But how those recruiting classes make their mark on the field in a few years will often look very different from those tidy lists released by teams. Consider the consensus top five hauls in 2007: Florida, USC, Tennessee, LSU and Higgins' pick, Texas. An analysis by The Associated Press showed that of the 123 high school players who sent in letters to those programs on signing day, only 59 (48 percent) were still on the teams' rosters as seniors in 2010 or '11 (depending on whether they redshirted).

And

A program is fortunate to keep more than 80 percent of a signing class deep into those players' careers, Bellotti said, but 65-70 percent is more typical. He suspects that as early commitments have become more common, attrition increases, because it's harder to predict whether a high school junior will pan out than a senior.

Here is an article from 4 days ago talking about the 8 players Iowa has lost since January.

I like to complain, but I know this kind of stuff goes on everywhere. It is more the timing of this and other recent departures that has me scratching my head. Why would someone quit after going through all the steps to get ready to play, especially a guy that had a very good chance to play and a scholarship.

I haven't really heard a good reason to switch to it yet. Not with our personnel anyway.

Here's some good reasons.....Our defense has been horrid the past 2 years, horrid. Even when we had decent talent in CPR first few years we still weren't that great, especially stopping the run. Now u may ask...Well why switch to only 3 down lineman if we can't stop the run? Good question actually. One word...Steelers. Probably the greatest run D in the history of the game on average over the past 20 years. All they run is a 3-4. Now don't get me wrong I fully know we aren't the steelers. And there are teams that run a 3-4 that still stink vs the run. It's a defense that is a more blitzing defense and a defense that is much harder to prepare for as you have 4 Lbs who are all over the place. You can blitz a couple Lbs from the outside and still have 2 Lbs back in the middle to protect vs the run or pass. There are lots of diff options with the 3-4. With a 4-3 if you blitz 2 Lbs you better get to the rb or qb or you will pay as has been the case a lot vs ISU. The other reason is we've been one of the worst teams in all FBS in getting sacks. Same would prob apply this year. So why not have a Dline that just needs to hold the middle and allow those 4 LBs to make plays. Ideally that's what u get. Will we be better on D? Who knows but I do trust Wally to know if he has the personnel to run a 3-4 effectively. What I do know is we've run a 4-3 forever and our defense has been not great for a very long time. Why not.
