So the family story...which is absolutely true...is that my great-grandpa died when his bakery delivery truck was hit by a train. (This happened back in 1926) My grandpa would have been 11.5 yo. My great-grandma was six months pregnant with my great aunt. The story was always muddied with the railroad gatemen in the tower was asleep, or that there was no one there at all...hence why the gates never came down.
Fast forward to present: Said great aunt passed away last week. While going through some things, my mom or one of her cousins found a newspaper that had been printed the day after the accident, with the top headline being about the accident. My mom went to her hometown library and printed off copies from microfiche and sent me the story. Turns out, there was a city ordinance saying RR crossings needed to be manned 24 hours a day. This railroad only had the crossings manned from 7a - 11p.
The accident happened between 6:40 and 6:45a.
One of my thoughts about the whole thing was that this would be an open & shut multi-million dollar lawsuit against the railroad company.
Just wanted to share because I always found this piece of family history fascinating.
Work said today we aren't going to NYC for a 4 day conference which sucks. They did say we may make a trip to the UK to go visit one of my customers so that would be neat
Before the banking and loan regulations strictened, my last company bought out a chain in London and were in discussions of opening in Montreal as well. I was one of the ones on the short list to potentially go to either, panic happened with the new regulations and this were put on the back burner. Sucks, because either one would have been an awesome experience.
