Hoiberg Watch 2015: Monday, June 1 Open Thread

I think you are talking out of your ***. It is my opinion that no amount of money would have kept Fred away from the NBA.

Yeah, this is the Bulls he is leaving for. I know there is a lot of NBA hate on this board, but come on, he isn't leaving for a lateral or even better college program. He is leaving for an internationally known pro basketball team. I love Fred as coach at ISU, but this is great news for him. The bigger concern at this point is who the next hire is and what happens moving forward.

Perhaps he'll roughly follow the route of I-80, but I have a hard time believing Fred will be traveling to Chicago in anything but a private jet.

Well his CAR should be approaching Schaumburg right about now, FWIW.

9 - While the team continues to gel together, there is some frustration that some feel betrayed after being promised by Fred that he would be here through their senior years - pretty common for the situation. Up until two weeks ago, the last time many players talked to Fred, he insisted he was likely to return to Ames next season. With the unconfirmed rumors of some recruits being told it was less than 50/50 he would return, some feel lied to and betrayed.

This is the part that makes it so I can never think of CFH the same way again.

All of statements about retiring here, dream job, kids golfing with the grandparents, etc. are kind of on me for being dumb enough to believe. A college basketball coach is after all selling himself like a politician.

However, as the mother of college boys in this age group, the thought that recruits deserved the truth but these boys, whom he had in his home and treated like family, did not get the same level of honesty, will make it so I can never look at him the same way. Fine that he fooled me but I really feel like when a parent entrusts their boy with a coach, he owes them something more.

Will always be grateful for what he did for us, but he isn't the person I thought he was at all. Feel awful for the team, JP better get them someone who will treat them right.

A Hoiberg watch? Why would I want one of those much less read a bunch of multi-page threads about them. Shoot, I don't even own an Apple Watch yet.

A $25 million hire with a heart condition and he's driving five hours to Chicago? He must be planning to run for political office as an austerity candidate next.

On the coaching search, I realize no one on the inside has suggested Fraschilla is a serious candidate (though I wouldn't be surprised if he's thrown his hat in the ring), but if he got the job, the meltdown would be truly epic. I really like Fran as a color man and he's been very good to ISU in that capacity, but as a head coach? That would be a "wow" moment, and not the good kind of "wow."

even though yes I agree Ames it someone liberal but there are some good options in Des Moines you can always move there. Honestly he has enough to retire now; peace is worth more than any monies can by buy you can easily easily live of 60k a year. He could have downgraded himself to assistant if he didnt like the limelight. After he wins the NBA championship then what?

wut?

Fraschilla indicated he was out of the running when he posted the ISU playbook.

Can't wait for the Otzelberger era to begin!

***The setting: A Cyclone mixer somewhere....

TJ: Ya know Jeff, McD let me take over practice once back in the day.

JH: Nice. I got nothing. (Sadly pockets all his Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, MJ, Karl Malone, and NBA Finals stories and walks away)

So you get to sweep your two-week long temper tantrum under the rug and call it a non-event?

Temper tantrum regarding what? Fred leaving for me is a non-event. Find me a post I made that would suggest otherwise.

What the event is for me, is who replaces Fred.

Last nights post with some added info...

Here is a quick update on a few of the more popular topics being discussed, in a highly filtered state given the fluidity of things...

1 - It is expected that the announcement of Fred to Chicago will be either late tomorrow or Tuesday. My bet would be on Tuesday based on the position of those that are saying Tuesday behind the scenes.

2 - Despite rumors to the contrary, no decision or offer has been made on a replacement coach, I know that for a fact. There are said to be 4 candidates under heaviest consideration and back-channel, high-level discussions continue to evolve with representatives of each. I feel that a decision will be made this week based on various discussions.

3 - I continue to hear grumbling about the financials involved and the reluctance to shell out the necessary funds, but it's all speculation since JP and Leath are the only two that really know what they're willing to go up to and for whom. FWIW, I do think money is going to play a bigger factor in the decision than many would like - though that should in no way be taken as a suggestion on who I think the replacement will be.

4 - There is a lot of continued chatter about several discussed names (i.e. Hornacek, TJ, and even Floyd) but also a surprising level of talk about some other lesser considered options. None of the information is good enough that I want to add speculation, but I do feel better about the level of search being conducted, though there are still clear concerns about the parameters involved (i.e. money).

5 - I continue to hear very positive things about how the team is sticking together and using this as further motivation to regroup from how the season ended. The assistant coaching staff has done a remarkable job keeping everybody focused on basketball in the huge vacuum created without Fred communicating on a regular basis.

New for Monday...

6 - It has been confirmed that Fred will have paperwork signed by 3 or 4 and a press release should go out by this evening with press conference tomorrow.

7 - I would anticipate a new coach being named by Thursday, possibly sooner.

8 - There continues to be a lot of speculative chatter about replacements, but again, no decision has been made. At the end of the day, I feel decently optimistic with the names being considered.

10 - As long as TJ stays on the staff in some capacity, I don't see anybody transferring. There is no hiding that Matt was close to Fred, but I'm continuously told he wants to continue to develop and prove himself.

So close that Fred lied to him. Warm and fuzzy stuff.

While I do think JH is probably the best coach we have a shot at right now, I question if it's the best move long-term. If this last month made you up your anxiety medicine, Horny seems like he would have the exact same issues. Here is a guy that is a full-on NBA guy and doesn't have 1/10 the loyalty to his Alma Matter that Hoiberg had. If he has success, we will be doing this over and over again.

That's not an issue for me at all. What I care about is hiring the best coach that will keep ISU basketball moving in the same direction. The longer we keep this ship sailing in the right direction, the more ISU will continue to establish itself as a decent basketball school.

Pollard needs to have some blame in this. Who in their right mind writes a contract that is backloaded with increasing pay with a coach that made it very clear that the NBA was a strong consideration. He should have had a front loaded normal 5 year deal in place that made it much harder to get Fred out of Ames sooner rather than later. Pollard needs some blame for how this went down. And for those of you that are thinking I am talking out of my ***, I don't care because I can promise you I am not.

Money is not why Fred left. I'm glad we didn't pay him more with more front end. Good job JP.

Anybody have a clue or worried about who Fred would take with him (meaning assistants) to Chicago? Something I am concerned about...Hate to see much of the that coaching staff change

There will be many who, because of the way things have went down, will not think of Fred Hoiberg in the same light. Me included. We had five good years and now he moves on to greener pastures. I don't know how much greener it can get in Ames. Probably a top 5 preseason ranking. Possibly two all americans, and a chance at the national title. I guess the Mayor moved on to higher offices, but will he have our vote?

Good post. 4 candidates?? That is interesting. That should make the "Otz is a done deal" talk stop. Makes me wonder who the other 2 candidates are, since JH and Otz are likely 2 of the candidates.

Wishful thinking.

Regardless of who is selected for coach there will be a thread started the day after our loss in the tournament suggesting that Otz's return to the program is the reason we didn't win the national championship.

Of course if Otz is selected we won't make the tournament.
