This. The writing has been on the wall for a while know, and optimism has just blinded some of us. Fred couldn't come out and say publicly "I'm going to the NBA" when the job he was essentially promised had yet to be open. There was obviously a very, very small chance all along that this job wouldn't open, so knowing that, Fred couldn't guarantee anything or make a statement to that effect.
So hypothetically, let's say he tries and fails in 3 years. (I don't think he will but w/e). Do we try to hire him back?

Of all the negative recruiting we'd had to put up from competitors with rumors of your departure, it sounds like you were the biggest source. And it possibly cost us a huge recruit.
No because he was NOT committed to the job or doing the current job he is paid to do. He should have resigned at the end of the season. Period.
He won't come back to college. He's going to retire after a few years in the nba, imo.
It's not what he said or didn't say to a recruit, it's that he was in that position at all. You can't do that to a program. The work put in on Diallo thrown away because the coach wasn't really the coach. I'm moderate but that's not good.
JP usually is pretty honest about things...meaning, whatever press conference is had, he'll be honest...now, he won't likely be ****** like he was at CHIZZ as I'm sure CFH has kept him in the loop and they've been in communication and both will be respectful.

Pollard has also changed his wording and public statements about Hoiberg and the NBA. He originally said "if the NBA was something Hoiberg wanted, then he'd have to make that decision" to "He told me from Day 1 he was NBA bound". Subtle differences in wording but HUGE in the meaning.
Its pretty obvious that JP and co. has known Fred is leaving as long as the Bulls job opened up.
