Obviously, Iowans and roots are important to Fred. I am easily imagining conversations he's having with his agent/Bulls reps along the lines of, "Guys, you're absolutely killing me here. Our fans are the best in the country, but this wait is killing them".

Some have opined that the longer this situation drags out, the worse it is for Iowa State. I firmly believe the opposite. With the Rag's op-ed, combined with the increasingly audible consternation of the fan-base, and a team full of guys who are whole-heartedly committed to Fred and have been with ISU for almost his whole career as coach, this thing gets harder on Fred by the day as he has more time to oversee options and consider the fallout.

I guess my opinion of Fred's heart - in both a literal and spiritual sense - gives me more hope than others that he'll be back - and not just as some lame-duck seat-warmer for a year or two. I don't see any way he'd put himself and others through this again unless it was cleaner and further in the future.

I hope Pollard is exhausting ALL options and having a lot of discussions (or the search firm is) with a wide variety of candidates. I think a complete search is all Cyclone fans are asking for.

Speaking with a Hornacek family member recently, was told its gonna take a lot to pull him back to the midwest and they did not think it would happen.

I am sure Pollard will try to sell him, but hopefully that will not be his only target.

Seriously.....$10 million??? That is insanity. That is more than the gross revenue our basketball program brings in before expenses. Good grief.

It's a no-brainer for the new coach to retain TJ. He has ties to our entire team basically. He's a proven recruiter, and from the sounds of things is pretty good with the scouting/X's & O's stuff.

As for TJ, I'm assuming he's motivated to stay as well, and maybe worse case you have to bump his salary $50k per year.

I see very little chance that TJ isn't on staff in some capacity from HC to AHC

Let's also remember that one of Hoiberg's first priorities when he first took the ISU job was to retain Coach Otz and convinced him not to follow McD to Creighton. Any new coach should have final say on who is on his staff but I would think Pollard and even Fred would recommend he be part of it. It would ease the transition for the team to a new coach it makes a lot of since for the new coach to give it a shot. Otz is only on a one year deal currently if it doesn't work out at the end of year one both parties can move on.

Not saying TJ as an assistant is 100% a package deal for a new coach, but a lot has to happen to make him *not* part of the new staff...

*ace recruiter of the Midwestern region
*best contact for all of our existing targets
*would hold half the current roster here and, by extension, that half the current roster would keep the other half around and intact for 2015/16 and a core for 2016/17
*good XO guy, learned from Fred for a long time
*yes yes, I know, it's a business, but has a lot of ties to Ames and ISU at this point

Hard not to want to keep him on as a the bridge to the new staff and the existing roster/recruits, helping with game planning, and as your lead recruiter for high school talent.

If he can get DG, Brackins, and Christopherson to come here with nothing to sell in the McD years, yeah, this might be good.

you forgot we have to pay him regardless.

Even so, You are talking then about close to $5 million per year. How about tying the extra $2 million as a bonus for winning the National Championship That is a lot of money for a Tourney best finish of a Sweet Sixteen.

At this point I think what Fred wants for Fred is more important than anything else. Fred wants to coach in the NBA, so getting there is the most important thing, no matter the fallout.
