This is one of the more incyteful posts I have seen regarding this whole mess. Don't know if he willl have the cash but I wouldn't rule out some level of ownership as well.

I should clarify; I'm trying to answer the age old question "WHAT DOES FRED OWE US"???

Simply put he owes us the NBA offers he's been able to cultivate. Yes, he brought HM back but it wouldn't have been back in an empty arena. You think Fred would disagree with me? You think he could have gone this far this fast at UNI? Maybe he could...I just don't think so.

Whatever. He did his part with the excitement and the winning.
Of course, he hasn't exactly left yet, either.

NBA is the pinnacle for players. It's not for coaches.

Go around and ask the average Joe these two questions and tell us the resutls;

1. Who was that guy who stood on the sideline wearing a snazzy suit while Lebron, Wade and Bosh won multiple NBA titles? (duh, ummm, deerrrr, dunno)

2. Who was that guy at (Duke, UNC, KU, Kentucky, Syracuse, Arizona, Wisc, Mich St.) who goes dancing nearly every year and who's teams is always a solid pick to make the FF in your office pool?

I don't follow the NBA very closely, but I can just as easily name a ton of NBA legendary coaches. Its every bit the fraternity that college basketball is.

Red Auerbach, Lenny Wilkins, Phil Jackson, Chuck Daly, Pop, Pat Riley, Don Nelson, the list goes on and on and on.

Regardless though, people who say Hoiberg doesn't owe us anything are entirely correct. He signed a contract to do a job, with clauses for being able to void the contract if he or ISU wanted to. And if he chooses to leave ISU he can do so by paying the buyout specified in the contract. That is all entirely correct. But the flipside of that is the fans don't owe him anything either. Hoiberg isn't "The Mayor". He isn't ISU's golden boy. He isn't a special Cyclone. He's just a man who got paid to do a job, sold us a lot of empty promises, and used ISU as a stepping stone to get the job he really wanted. That's fine. Hoiberg can do that. But we were duped. He's just another coach making a pit stop in Ames. That's it. We don't owe him anything either.

Pop is pretty debatable. But anyway I think if you play the "first thing that comes in to mind game" and say: "Basketball Coach", you're going to get John Wooden probably 50% of the time and then a hodgepodge of random coaches and Michael Jordan making up the other 50%.

I don't think NBA coaching is the pinnacle. Pay wise, yes. But not in respect. Except if you think you can surpass Phill or the Spurs coach. (who I can't even remember his name if that tells you anything.

Who are the pinnacles of coaching? Guys with multiple Final Four and NCAA Championship rings. Self, Ol Roy, Dean Smith, Boehiem, Izzo, Knight. Tubby, Calipari. Those my friend put many and nearly all NBA coaches to shame.

The best basketball players play in the NBA. It is the pinnacle of basketball so its the pinnacle of coaching.

The CEO of Coca-Cola might not be more respected than the CEO of some tiny company, but its still a more impressive position.

Plus, the pinnacle is all relative. If you want to teach young players and mold them, the college is the pinnacle. If you love the in game strategy, then the NBA gives you way more of that that college basketball.

Fred can kick me in the nuts 1000 times and I will still love him. But once he does it 1001, I am not so sure.

That's a really petty overreaction. I understand you are upset, but why the need to tear down Fred Hoiberg as a person, just to make yourself feel better about the situation?

Maybe Jamie knew that the main issue was the commitment to a dedicated practice facility that he was not in a position to move forward on. It's also reasonable to assume that the Cyclone Wrestling Club was also not in a position to provide a multi-million dollar facility. No reason to create false hope in a situation like that. Basically a repeat of the situation with the gymnastics coach.

He won a bunch of those titles in the dark ages of the NBA when no one was paying attention to the league. When Riley and Bullz Jackson were winning their titles that was THE show. I'm not saying Pop isn't an HOF'er or a poor coach, just not on the level of the other 3 and I don't think many casual people have any idea who Greg Popovich is.

People on this message board are shockingly ignorant when it comes to the NBA. I mean, I guess it kind of makes sense since a lot of college fans don't follow the NBA, but holy crap, don't try to have an intelligent conversation about it if you don't know what you're talking about.
