My MBB short list for coaches.

Hiring an inexperienced head coach with no track record is a good way to blow it up. I want to avoid that.

Usually the good HC's are the ones who learned from good HC's. If Otz leaves to be a HC somewhere and has success you will all be flipping **** we didn't promote him.

And stop with the intrim for a year talk. That's just beyond ******* stupid.

My preference would be a current power 5 head coach who has been at his current school for a long time that might want a change of scenery. Maybe a Jamie Dixon type. Mike Brey? I dunno, just throwing some names out as I hope like all hell they don't promote TJ.

If the plan is to promote Otz when Fred leaves, then I hope he gets only a 2 year deal. Is that possible?

It won't be like Otz will have to rebuild the program and will need a lot of years to prove himself. He will basically be handed a Cadillac. If he fails in year one, JP will need to financially be able to fire him IMO. If we sign Otz to a 5 year or longer deal, that could be suicide.

If Fred is here for at least a few more years to groom Otz now that Fred has been groomed into a better HC, then I'd be ok with it. Especially if he hired a Lutz/Sadler type of assistant to lean on as Fred did.

If Fred leaves this year though, I would aim higher.

I do think Otz will be looked at by other schools down the road though if Fred sticks around and keep winning. That's normally how it works.

I'm on board with this. If he is grooming Otz to be the head coach, that's a different story, but I'd rather they aim higher on the hire.

All that said, I think Otz might be a great coach, it's just that we have no idea if that will be the case. And for the rebuttal I expect from others: Hoiberg obviously didn't have head coaching experience, but he had/has a lot of intangibles and is loved like no other, which made that risk a lot more worth it.

I want someone like Fred, not necessarily philosophically but at ISU we need someone to think outside the box and fit their style to the guys we can attract here. Floyd and Larry used the same strategy, they just took hard nosed, high effort defensive juco guys to win. Fred's strategy was just the more modern equivalent of what those 2 did. It's not like they stockpiled highly recruited kids (sanz Fizer). They won with "their guys".

This is better than my interim suggestion -- which is getting bashed here, understandably, because it's not ideal -- similar concept.

Short contract with modest salary is OK. My worry would be, even if 2-year deal happened, Otz signs short deal, has a huge season with ready-made roster, then JP immediately extends it to 10 years to avoid losing him, then teams regress and we're stuck with bad buyout situation.

Worst -case, I know, but that should be part of the thought process.

TJ has moved from ISU assistant to Washington assistant. If TJ has success as ISU HC, and then a HC position opens up at the University of Washington, he'd probably jump again.

He's shown that he's eager to move laterally to get out of Ames.

I just. I can't.

Royce is trying to get back into basketball. Maybe he can coach at home and then use facetime on the road?
