Trying to figure out my health insurance options. Looks like I know where my severance money is going...

I've been so confused who you guys were talking about until KC's post. I kept thinking Kelly was a poster on CF

Sooooo... I told my wife about the whole podcast idea and first words out of her mouth: "Do these people know you have an accent? Is anybody going to understand what you're saying? HaHaHa"

My department (and my unit) are both very international. Over the years I've developed a pretty good ear for accents. Wouldn't but ME at all...and now I really want to hear you! ;)

Foreign accents just make me feel dumb because it reminds me I only speak one language. Like 20 years ago in Mexico chatting with the bellhop dudes who spoke Mayan, Spanish and English and who wanted to practice their Spanish with my girlfriend who spoke English, Russian and Spanish.

Foreign language skills impress the hell out of me and get me all "What wizardry is this?"

BTW, per that xgf, Sean Connery's Scottish accented Russian in the opening scene of Red October was "terrible".

I'm with you. I would love to be able to speak 7-8 languages. It's such a cool skill to have.

I think the US is really far behind a lot of other countries in terms of people knowing multiple languages. Of course, in Europe, proximity to other countries helps a bunch. I've attempted to learn a few on my own, but unless I'm around daily conversations in another language, I'm pretty much a lost cause.

I've started and stopped learning Spanish so many times. I would love to learn that and French. Every now and then I go on a duolingo binge and have a little bit learned for a while.

I think the only French my husband retained from living in Canada was a few dirty phrases.

Doesn't everyone have an accent? Mine just happens to my Iowa bland.

In college, I lived in a house off-campus with a guy from Southern Iowa, me from eastern northish-central Iowa, and a guy from Northern Iowa...it was amazing even in that the difference in accents. The guy from southern Iowa, I had to have him say things over again just to understand him, and I've had people tell me that I say 'boat' like I'm from Minnesota.

My best friends wife doesn't want him to attend a friends bachelor party in the Lake of the Ozarks because of how crazy it can get. He keeps sending me screen shots of their texting conversation.

Hilarious.

Maybe I am a pansy but she does have a point. Excessive drinking and water just don't go together imo.

"A" followed by an "N" will betray me as a Chicagoland native. Dance, advance, aunt, and yes...pants...give me trouble. (I pronounce "aunt" like the insect) I'm always consciously either dropping my jaw further or opening my throat when I say those words. My husband just pointed out another word this happens with, but I can't remember now.

Although, if I hear a snippet of either true or fake Chicagoan dialogue, I can purposely drop into that accent way too easy.

Anyone have an expertise on refinishing furniture? Just wondering best products for someone who is clueless. And it is just a simple nightstand so it doesn't have to look like a masterpiece or anything.
