ISU's release regarding Darien Williams' release

I'm sure the same people absolutely outraged that Williams has likely decided to follow Matt to St Johns would be equally outraged if we stole a highly coveted recruit when we hired a new coach, right?

Like if Diallo was a Washington commit, and he followed TJ here, everyone would be up in arms about how we shouldn't recruit him, correct?

There is a higher probability the kid joins a San Diego State, USC or even UCLA vs St Johns. The kid is from southern California, he could have finished his JC studies in Iowa but chose to come back to California.

Wheels were set in motion awhile back, he was having 2nd thoughts about coming to ISU before Matt left, but was holding to his commitment. When Matt left that changed.

It was only the plan because he needed the surgery. Do I think he didn't come here because he went to California? No. He didn't come here because Abdelmassih left. I think he MIGHT have been more likely to stay though if he had been in Iowa the last year or so. No denying the loss of Abdelmassih is why he left.

He needed surgery when he committed didn't he? It wasn't bad news because it wasn't news.

But I agree it's probably easier for him not to come since he was further away.

He was committed before the shoulder surgery news was public but they might have known the whole time.

Yes, but I am not going to tell you who they are. The people I know are very familiar with Southern California high school sports and many of players who come from here. There is a reason he did not finish his JC studies in Iowa.
He was not enamored with the state of Iowa.

Of course maybe you have people you know out in LA that would beg to differ from the people I spoke to.

He may go to St John's but he is also considering trying to get on a team in LA/San Diego area.

Good luck to Darien, where-ever he goes to next. If it is St. Johns, so be it, I wish him all the best. If he wasn't committed to playing here, he wouldn't have given it his all next season anyway and there is one thing that this team needs to be successful and that is 100% commitment to the team and teammates that they are on the court with. If that component is missing, it is worse than an empty scholarship. It can lead to a player on the court and in the locker room that may provide a negative distraction.

I feel like it is pretty hypocritical to lambaste a young man for changing his mind, while welcoming in athletes from other programs with open arms when they help us succeed. Just the nature of being a fan I suppose, but it does seem pretty childish to whine and moan about it when we've relied so heavily on transfer players ourself. The only thing that I am worried about for next year is injury/surgery recovery. We have a phenomenal core and I am completely confident that we will be adding other quality pieces to the puzzle to fill in for the ones we've lost, but there are always variables attached to injury recovery that cause me to be concerned. Sports medicine is remarkable these days and I have no doubt that Naz will be a soldier when it comes to his rehab, but I'll have a nagging fear until his is well and truly healed and recovered.

I've gotten used to the hyper-negative on this site and realize that when it comes to fanatical fan sites, overreaction to just about everything is a norm, but it does seem like with each year of success the hand wringing, angry diatribes, and completely incomprehensible (to me) negativity gets worse and worse even for the smallest things. I'm not saying that the MA and the subsequent student athlete departures are small, but they are definitely not the end of the world and we will have an incredible team taking the court next season that will be fully capable to once again challenge for a Big 12 title and with some luck and timing hopefully make a deep run in the tourney. Then of course we can fixate on whatever 'sky is falling' news comes on the heels of next season too.

I don't think anyone has lambasted Williams for changing his mind. I've probably been as grumpy as anyone on here regarding this situation (too much so I admit) and I'm not upset with Williams in this in the slightest. It's just the specifics of the situation, and not buying the 'official' story that's got my dander up.

The idea of Williams having second thoughts regarding Iowa St. for a while now, and maybe not wanting to come back to Iowa and Matt leaving was just the straw that broke the camel's back just seems much more plausible to me than the idea that he was a happy and gung-ho ISU commit for the past year until a week ago, and then suddenly pulls out because Matt A leaves, but without talking to anyone representing any other school.

Trying to? That sounds like backing out without a plan for the next step.
If it's St. John's, it sounds fishy to me.
If he doesn't have a plan, it just sounds like a stupid decision to back out without anything lined up.

There have already been discussions.. Trying is perhaps is not the correct term. But there are limitations of who can contact a kid under an LOI.. Lets see what happens the next few days.

You are bad at this. Fred going to ISU is not comparable to Matt going to StJ and Williams following (if he does) or even Diallo.

In regards to hoping for TJ to bring recruits from UW and hoping MA does not do the same for StJ, cheering for a team is hypocritical by nature. I hope we "get rich" and have success at the expense of others, and **** anyone that attempts to do the same at the expense of ISU.
