Deonte Burton's game

I agree, but anyone who thought BDJ was going to be the next Kane was an idiot. Different games and different body types

Well it was Matt A who said BDJ was like a more athletic Kane, so if you want to call out anyone for placing high expectations on him, you can start with the coaching staff.

Being more athletic does not equate to being a better basketball player

I would be shocked if it weren't this way. Williams played one year at juco and has recently had surgery.

Burton is actually working out with our team and there is a lot more film on him

Yeah but Burton played sparingly at Marquette. Hardly set the world on fire. Williams had shoulder surgery whic to me is way better than something like knee surgery. Beforehand, he was projected as a top 3 overall juco recruit
People will be shocked when he gets serious minutes at the 3/4 next season

Chances are no one on here really knows much more than what has been said.

He appears to be a great athlete. He's built like an NFL linebacker and can jump out of the gym.

Anything more is pure speculation

That's pretty much it. But, he did shoot over 40% from the 3 last year, and 50% his freshman year when he made the Big East All Rookie team. He did score 23 points vs. Xavier. Fred said he beats up on people in practice.

So just saying if he is 6'4 240, he is shorter than Chris Babb and weighs almost as much as Royce White. I have a hard time envisioning those dimensions playing any position. Hoiberg can always utilize positionless players so I'm interested to see how this pans out. Maybe he will cut weight like Georges to be more effective as a perimeter player or maybe his length will translate more towards the post?

Kantrail Horton played a combo guard spot at 6'1" and 225 (officially, most likely more) and was extremely effective, I don't see much about his skill set to make think he won't contribute.

Not sure how much of an impact Darien will have right out of the gates (because of his surgery) but the best comparison that I've been given is that his game is similar to Draymond Green. Also I've been told the staff is absolutely ecstatic to have Darien and Hallice Cooke for 3 full years, it's really going to provide them a solid foundation after next season.

we are all hoping burton can reach his potential under hoiberg. he wasn't a productive player for marquette.

He played 10.6 MPG in his freshman year at Marquette, which went 17-15 (9-9).

Not a ton of time on a mediocre team there--then again, sophomore Wesley Johnson looked similar on a bad Iowa State team. WJ was hurt, though. Burton appears to be fine.

Looking at his "per 40 minutes" splits...
POINTS = 24.0
ASSISTS = 1.9
BLOCKS = 0.8
TURNOVERS = 2.5

Looks like he can score like crazy. That's a Niang-level of offensive productivity, or even more than that... but in 1/4 or 1/5 of the playing time.

This one gets me, though, if you look at the advanced stats:

PER (in the Big East, so number inflation against awful competition) = 24.4

That's really good. Compare that to our eight main players from last year...

McKay = 23.9
Morris = 21.6
BDJ = 19.4 (yes, he was actually a good player, just an obvious head case)
Niang = 17.5
Hogue = 15.8 (15 is supposed to be an average player)
Long = 13.4
Nader = 12.6
Thomas = 11.5

His high PER comes because he scores a lot even if he didn't play a lot. He played 190 minutes in conference last year and scored 114 points. That's 0.60 points per minute. That's nuts.

For comparison...

I don't think he can keep that up at volume--but it's not impossible. Doug McDermott pulled 0.80 as a senior. The Big 12 might present more of a challenge, as well.

And for our own benchmark, here's Kane/Ejim from last year...

Kane = 0.50
Ejim = 0.57

Anybody know how he scores like that...?

He doesn't look to be a good outside shooter, or even a great inside one. Looks like he gets fouled like crazy, though. That'd be good. We need somebody to abuse the other team's bigs on fouls and to be able to slow the game down without using a timeout when we need to.

Be prepared for backlash. People tend to hate unbiased statistics and facts on here.

I, on the other hand, appreciated the info. Thanks.

Have a buddy that has seen him play, he says the guy is tough and athletic but isn't going to score a lot other than in transition.

Not going to lie...I hope this isn't "totally" true. I mean for next season, that is. Seems like we have had alot of players that can score in transition, but that's not something most teams are going to allow now that they know how to play us. But obviously we went after him so perhaps his ability to defend/rebound/etc. could be an added plus.

Ecstatic because they're projecting them to be that good....or relieved because they're the only experience we'll have left after Niang/McKay/Naz/Monte will be gone? Man, 2016 recruiting is huge.

Who will be shocked? I've seen lots of talk about Darien on this board. The thread is meant to talk about Burton, so why would you expect a lot of talk about Williams?

You're welcome. Thanks for the nice comments.

Thinking about this a bit more, to elaborate, if anything, the information above just confuses and intrigues me more than answers the question on what he's going to be like.

-very limited playing time on an average time... why not more?

-INSANELY efficient when he did play, however

-mostly from scoring... didn't look like an elite rebound or distribution guy

-doesn't look like an elite shooter, either, compared to our guys in conference last year...

-44.1% 2pt shooter (that would be last out of our guys last year, McKay was #1 at 58.1% and Niang was last at 45.8% with a ton of volume)

-4/6 from three... not much of a sample size there

-60% free throw shooter... I'm sure Fred can help, but that's not gaudy

He was great in small doses. Maybe he can at least do the same thing for us. Another year of practice and a better system and coaching might help, too. But he doesn't scream that he's going to be some sort of monster, to me, particularly to start. We've got at least seven assets right now that have proven to be effective major conference players with volume (though not always consistency, in the case of Thomas and Nader):

Morris, Niang, McKay, Long, Thomas, Nader, Cooke*

*pending injury recovery

I'd have to imagine all of them (and anybody brought in, either a graduate transfer/JUCO or Diallo) are ahead of Burton right now. His efficiency stats are insane, and he's clearly got a lot of potential given that and his recruiting ranking, but I'm wary of scaling it.

Williams is a complete wild card. No idea how the injury recovery will go, how he'll adjust to major conference ball, but the rankings and the fit are there (Fred salivates with a big, tall guy who can shoot).

He'll be nice to have, and figures to be a core guy after next year. We might lose 5/5 starters after next season...

Morris - maybe NBA by then
Long - graduating
Nader/Diallo - graduating/NBA
Niang - graduating
McKay - graduating

And we'll need to reload quick.

everyone keeps hoping for a player who can rebound and defend.

that's why wojo couldn't play him many minutes - he couldn't rebound or defend!

hopefully burton can build on his skills under hoiberg - i see no reason he wouldn't.

The team was/is bad, pretty hard to have definitive conclusions about individual players.

We've picked up two guys from there, the first one is a keeper.

If you're 6'4 and 240, you have the ability to be a good rebounder. It's between your ears if you're not.
