NFL: NFL Offseason Thread

Interesting move by the Cowboys. If everything goes right for them they just got one of the best pass rushers in the game. The catch is that he's still likely to face a suspension from the NFL if they determine that he violated the player conduct policy. One or two games wouldn't be a big deal but if the league comes down hard (and they might have to in order to win the PR battle) then he could be looking at upwards of six games.

Dolphins close to signing Michael Crabtree for ~$4 million/year.

That's $3 million cheaper for an over rated and undersized TE in Charles Clay. I'll never understand the hype ESPN had for him.

And definitely replaces Hartline, who was just $1 million cheaper but also less talented.

Vikings add Taylor Mays and Casey Matthews. Neither are world beaters, but both are in spots of need, and will hopefully at least provide solid depth.

Looks like the owners changed the ineligible receiver rule that the Ravens complained about the Patriots using in the Playoff game. Now, if a player reports as ineligible, they are only able to line up in the tackle box, rather than the whole field. A little late for the Ravens, but it seems like a decent rule change.

One of the proposed rule changes was that if a team goes for two and is successful, they could kick an extra point, there more making 9 points possible after a touchdown.

It won't be passed.

I thought it was stupid at first, but now I find it intriguing. Definitely would get teams to start thinking about going for two, and getting down by 9 makes it a one possession game.

I had nearly the same reaction. Initially thought, that's dumb. Thought more about it, and it might be pretty cool.

Call me when they get rid of the stupid horse collar penalty.

??? I don't know that I've ever run into someone who was anti-horsecollar penalty. What's your opposition?

Just one more handicap placed on defensive players. They have a shrinking window of legal ways to make a tackle. Have to be careful tackling below the waist, can't hit above the chest, if any part of them even grazes a QBs helmet it's a 15-yard penalty.

If there's data showing a dramatic difference in the number of knee/leg injuries as a result of horse collar tackles prior to the rule being instituted I guess I'd change my tune, but I have my doubts.
