Decision Time on Jackson

Maybe he's just cranky that UNI totally crapped the bed and Iowa was gift wrapped a title and let it slip away due to an even worse first couple rounds than we had compared to expectations.

LOL..."compared to expecations..." Iowa will finish 2nd. We might finish outside of the top 15. I would trade places with them in a second. Anyone who wouldn't is kidding themselves.

UNI had a really rough year. Injuries killed them. Peters had a rough tourney and didn't look like himself. Cooper Moore wrestled well. Cabell wrestled well too but was victimized by the draw and Telford's early round upset. Their future remains bright. Perhaps you'd like to once again definitively claim that they are a more well supported program then when confronted with facts put me on ignore and not respond. That was fun the first time.

If these are the goals for the wrestling program color me disappointed. If you're an ISU and you are just into the "top quarter" it isn't impressive. We're one of the haves, not one of the have nots.

I didn't say these were the goals. I said my evaluation would take these results into account. Unfortunately for wrestling fans, wrestling is a "have not" sport in today's college sports. I would probably also extend the contracts for the coaches other non-revenue sports with similar results, such as cross country, track, volleyball, women's basketball, and golf.

Seriously, JP gives his hires an extended length of time to succeed. Especially after a previous coach's "betrayal." I will be shocked if Jackson isn't given a contract extension.

Give me a break. I have never once expressed disappointment in anything other than his performance as a head coach. To say nothing he would ever do would be good enough for me--that's absolute crap. I think a top 10 finish would have been wonderful. It would have meant more young guys on the podium and signaled more promise for the future. Unfortunately, we are 20+ points from a top 10 finish and have only scored 33 (so far). We have also not been in the top 10 for 5 years.

My impression of KJ is that he's a good man who recruits good kids. I think his coaching performance has not lived up to expectations and this program isn't where it should be. That's it.
Sure, you say it would have been wonderful, but it wouldn't have been enough for you. And you hide this behind what you call "poor results," but I'm fairly sure you're only this adamant, because of who he is. I have never once seen you complain about any of the CWC wrestlers, none of the volunteers, none of the assistants. Again, I'm pretty sure it's only because you have a twisted reason for disliking KJ.

That's because he's the guy in charge. It is decidedly his program. The buck starts and stops with him. I have expressed my desire for him to get it done many times. I have even posted that I would like nothing better than for him to shut me up. Unfortunately, that hasn't happened. We are sliding down the standings, not moving up.

Who would rip on CWC wrestlers? Ripping a bunch of young guys making peanuts in order to win gold for the USA? That would take a special kind of stupidity. And volunteers? Get serious.

Basically none of this is true. But keep spewing the same crap over and over again without addressing the issues at hand. Very productive. :realmad:

I have nothing against KJ. I just do not think he's a good coach. I was not excited by the hire but I don't think I was negative about him until things started to slide.

Wrestling certainly isn't my strong point, but even I know wrestling was sliding long before KJ was hired. Attendance has been down for decades, If he is graduating kids and keeping them out of the negative limelight (police blotter) give him time and hope things improve.

I would challenge anyone to just look at your posting history. You sir can just go away and keep renewing your season tickets to UNI wrestling.

KJ's contract is up following this season. His NCAA finishes are as follows:
2010: 3rd
2011: 20th
2012: 35th
2013: 11th
2014: 12th
2015: 14th or 15th

The bulk of this year's points and our only 2015 AA is graduating. We have some solid to good wrestlers returning but no stars, and some holes in the lineup.

So let's put personal attacks aside and talk about what JP's move should be. Should Jackson get another extension?

Because a lot of us care about wrestling and also want ISU to win in every sport. Why sponsor a sport if you don't want to win? There are only two revenue sports. Are those the only ones that matter?

There are conflicting opinions about the program leadership but one thing is for sure--everyone who cares about the program is hoping for better results no matter who is in charge.

His recruiting is no where near elite level. Some good kids but not nearly enough of them. I don't understand people who say "we aren't getting anyone better." How could you possibly know this and what are you clinging to?

I would support any of the following realistic candidates to replace KJ. And probably others.

Damian Hahn - Cornell assistant. A huge reason for their success.
Cody Sanderson - Wants his own program at some point and will do it at a place where a title CAN be won. This would be a huge hire for ISU and my #1 candidate. I think the fans can forgive him for leaving with Cael. Not sure about JP.
Drew Pariano - Northwestern head coach. My number #2 candidate. Fantastic recruiter but will never be able to build enough depth at NU, with their limitations, to be a serious title contender. He won't have that problem in Ames.
Brandon Eggum - Minnesota assistant. Has to be wondering how much longer J is going to hang around. Is there a succession program in place?
Travis Paulson. From what I gather he's doing the majority of the coaching in the ISU room. Has his own ideas. Not one of my favorites but I would support the move and think we would be better off.
Eric Guerrero - See Eggum, though Smith has more years left than J.
Tim Flynn - Edinboro. Might be getting a little long in the tooth but maybe he hands over the reigns in a few years to a younger understudy like Paulson?
Mark Perry - Illinois. Yes, I said it.

These are the ones that I've been thinking of. Certainly there are more candidates. We have seen what we will get with KJ. None of these guys would make us worse off. I truly believe that.

That's great but Gadson is just one guy. What about the other 9 weights? Having just one AA is not acceptable.

He's "showing he can get it done with his own recruits and the team is making a steady climb." What? Are you that oblivious? He's not getting it done. Finishes outside the top 10 are bad. ISU is one of a hand full of programs where an NCAA title can be won yet we are not even cracking the top 10. We aren't climbing, we are actually doing the opposite. We have regressed. 12th to 13th to 14th/15th the past 3 years.
Nice recognition of what Jackson was able to do after Bael left, quit posting and go away

You guys should not be so critical of NEIcyFan. He is at least consistent. Almost exactly a year ago, he started a post like this one, questioning KJ's future. Here is one of his entries:

"Please give me a break with the anti-KJ stuff. I've said since he signed the extension that I'm on board and looking for improvement. He's our guy for next year but doesn't have a contract beyond next season. It is only prudent at this point in time to discuss what needs to be done for him to receive another extension.

As for your question above, that's a relatively easy question to answer. ISU is one of the most storied and most well supported wrestling programs in the country. ISU is one of only a hand full of programs with a realistic shot of contending for a national title on a regular basis. The past 4 years we have finished: 20th, 35th, 11th and 12th. In the fifth year of this program we couldn't get into the top 10 and in the fifth year of this program we had 5(!) starters finish with sub-.500 records. Half the team had a losing record. Think about just how bad that is for just a second. You're telling me that in five years it is unrealistic to think we could find a wrestler at most every weight class who could produce a winning record?

This isn't football where it takes years to rebuild. Wrestling programs can/should be rebuilt rather quickly. Simply put, recruiting, retention and development do not approach elite levels.

If having higher expectations than what we are getting for program than what we're getting makes me a bad fan, so be it. We're Iowa State, for crying out loud. When I read comments from this thread and others that we should be content with the results we are getting it makes me think too many people have forgotten this. These kind of comments make me want to pull my hair out."

Does this entry sound familiar? A leopard never changes its spots.

Thumbs Up[/h] None...

So we basically if everyone comes through we won't be any better. Is that acceptable to everyone? Another finish outside the top 10? We are in the top 5 for attendance most every year. We are within the top 10 in facilities. We have a tremendous tradition and a great fan base.

Why are these results acceptable?

I was wrong. We beat a VT team that may not even finish in the top 10. Woot, I guess? The other teams you mentioned are not good. 34th, 16th/17th, 29th and 19th. In that order.
Wonder how the team would feel about your positive vibe toward their accomplishments or improvement over the last 5 years. BTW, quit posting and go away
