Done with Wally

Just looking at points is easy to do. Aside from the Texas game - what has the offense done in any of those games?

I'm one who believes the offense has a strong role in the D's performance. You just can't expect a defense to spend an entire game on the field and get things done.

Today was a perfect example. We played a top talent team - and still our offense is our defense's own worst enemy.

Simply put - the D has helped the O 10x more than the other way around.

No our defense was their own worst enemy, unless they were magically worn down on the first drive of the game.

Over the CPR time, the D has been better, but that's only because the offense has been horrendous. It doesn't make the defense good.

This defense isn't capable of holding its own much less helping out the offense. We've seen flashes on offense but not enough to keep the Keystone Cops of the defense off the field. We haven't played a complete game on both sides, but I'm afraid the performance ceiling is just so low on defense. We just don't have the talent there and now the injuries are piling up and our second string are just not talented or ready to play winning football. It all falls on Rhoads, but the wheels are definitely coming loose on the season. I think we're going to have our hands full with hapless Kansas.

This is kind of a messy situation. Wally deserves to go, no doubt. But bringing in a good DC when Rhoads is on the hot seat next year, will be tough.

I would agree in past years. I don't think the D has helped the O this year. The O played good enough for us to win the KSU and Texas game if the defense could get a stop. They couldn't.

When the defense use to give up a lot of points or yards, it was because they were getting tired from being on the field all game and the scores were coming at the end of games. That's not the case this year. We gave up 35 points in the first half today. Same for the Baylor game. We gave Texas 14 points in the first 6 minutes of the game, and that's how many points they average over 60 minutes against everyone else.

I agree though. Typically our offense has put out defense in bad spots.

Our defense has been crap since Klein/Knott left. No other way around it.

Never suggested the D was good. Just saying that the offense shouldn't get a pass - which many seem to be giving.

No they weren't worn down the first drive. But I think they need a bit more than three quarters of the offense drives being 3 and outs. ]

Our defense was horrible last year (#94). We are even worse this year (predicting #114 this week). Probably had 20 missed tackles. No sacks. We have a HS qb who was our best LB today and a non-existent DL. Defensive recruiting is very very weak. Wally is probably about 74 years old and needs to retire, along with Shane. Very sad to watch. I would rather see offensive 3 and outs than a hopelessly helpless defense. This is a continuation of the unbelievably bad defensive ending of the Texas game. However bad Mess was last year, Wally is beyond that. On offense, SR reminds me of Barnett - throws the ball away too much on third down. If we punt, it is like a guaranteed 7 points for the opposition; so why not run or throw a catchable ball on third down instead of throwing it out of bounds or on the ground? OK. That is all. Had to vent my frustrations. Go Cyclones. Please win 2 more this year.

The only other option today was to blitz like vs Texas which I would prefer. However I knew this was coming today. Our LBs are flipping tiny. Take Miller out with injury, and they back pedaled after every snap. They weren't going to be able to take on the OU guards, so they tried to run around them, well that doesn't work. This was the largest mismatch of the day. OU lineman downfield on our LBs. Game over.

Problem is, our MLB's have been doing this all year, save the Iowa game. Our other 2 LBs are way too small to play in this league. Move Knott back to Safety. Never been impressed with others. Moving Meyers away from DE not smart either. Act of desperation like moving Irving into DT was last year. Recruiting has to pick up on D.

Nobody's excusing the offense.
Really, did 3 quarters of bad offense affect the defense? They were equally bad throughout all three quarters.

The only thing I'd defend on the team would be the kicker and punter. They're solid. Everything else is bad.

All I'd say is - go back through the games this year and see what the offense has done in it's first - say 5 drives - in each game.

35 today - can't argue too much about that. But ask this - should OU have had 8 offensive possessions if the O was doing ANYTHING?

Again - the D sucks. I'm not saying otherwise. But we knew that coming into the year. The O was supposed to be good and are anything but..

When* did they/he replace our defensive players with turnstiles in Cyclone uniforms?

Probably around the time where they thought kicking the two best DT's out of the program was a good idea.

How many chances do you get to change coaches/coordinators? There is so much wrong with this whole thing, why argue over what is the worst? Our athletes don't scare anyone on either side of the ball.

The talent level in the front seven is just mid to low level MAC type guys. Then pile on the injuries and you get our results from today. We're too small across the board no doubt about that. I just don't see the pipeline having talent there to improve us meaningfully. We have suspect starters and paper thin depth. We need a TON of help on defense, because it's clear we're a joke out there today.

Agreed. I sometimes wonder if between CPR's and Wally's experience, they think can take a good to decent athlete and make a football player out of them, which is a lazy way to approach recruiting in this league. This isn't the old Big East. Either that, or they have far too much confidence in their own coaching ability with the caliber of guys we are signing. For Gods sake, we are a Big 12 team. Recruit like it! I want to see us recruit FOOTBALL players, not just athletes with good measurables.

Answer: as many as he wants because apparently everything is not his fault, just back luck, bad timing, bad situation etc. The guy makes $2 million a year and isn't getting it done. Any place else he would have been gone after last year. He started trending down in the middle of 2012 and has been on a bad trajectory ever since. The fact that there is a consensus that he should get another year is mind boggling. Keeping him around is going to be much more expensive in the long run than letting him go. The program isn't completely burnt to the ground... yet. Somebody could come in next year and get the turnaround started. The year after that? It's going to just be that much harder.

This team is in desperate need of an impact LB and playmakers at DL. We honestly have neither. Morressey is pretty good but aside from him, Knott and Ferch are good enough to play as long as there is an exceptional LB to run the show. At dline, they are shorthanded, young and not ready for b12 play. Morressey is the only player in my mind that should be starting at the B12 level.
Even with a new DC, our defense will struggle at stopping the run next year.

That's not the lazy way to approach recruiting. First, those are the players that are available to ISU, second, it's the same approach K-State takes to recruiting. The difference is CPR and Co are really bad at it.

10 minutes ago I stopped at Kum & Go on Mortensen in West Ames, and Wally walked in. He turned to his right and walked directly towards the liquor cooler, grabbed two 6-packs of Coors Light, paid, and walked out.

If he's drinking away the sorrows, so shall we.
