Column: Don't sleep on Sam

Didn't read the whole thing.

I like Sam. I do. But his biggest problem is that he never took any chances down field because he seemed terrified to make a mistake. If he's gotten over that, I'd like him to be the guy. If he hasn't, I want Grant.

We're not good enough to be able to expect to have meticulous drives down field every drive. As the underdog, there are times in every game where you just have to take a shot.
In any games he has had any type of protection he has thrown the ball downfield. He takes a healthier amount than Grant, which is why his TD/INT ratio is better, and why he actually has a very slight edge in yards/attempt.
We are not good enough to be careless with the ball.

The bad news:
when you have 2 QBs, then you actually have no QBs. I think both are OK, but neither is great. I find it hard to believe we suddenly have 2 Sage/Seneca level QBs on the team.

The good news:
with better management (simpler offense, more rush game, better OL play) we could have better QB play than last year and a more successful offense, even if neither QB is a world-beater.

I'm sure Mangino will pick whichever one's strengths fits better into the offense he wants to run.

There have been many good 2 QB teams. Both Iowa ( hope you are right on that one) and UNI( hope you are wrong on that one) plan on using 2 QBs and maybe us.

Honestly I think the staff thinks(or thought) Grant was the better passer, but he hasn't shown it as consistently as they had hoped. Sounds like there isn't much separation right now, in which case Sam could get the nod because of not only experience.. But he also adds the mobility element to the offense.

And yes, this IS Manginos offense. Just like how Herman had control, not how Mess was forced to use Herman's offense then implement our new OL coaches scheme the following year.

Yes, Mess was a good guy and got a bad rap.

Here's another question i'm relatively curious on, Is it truly Mangino's offense? I really hope that CPR has kept his nose out of the offensive meetings, and let Mangino be the coach he is. Not like Rhoads was with Mess last year. CRP had Mess rapped around his finger.

I don't think we will have to worry about who is running the Offense. You don't hire Mark Mangino and then tell him how to do his job.

So...

@BobbyLaGesse: Second straight media session Rhoads used "both" to describe QB competition. It is down to Rohach and Richardson.

@BobbyLaGesse: And then the ISU football quarterback competition was down two http://t.co/ibk1HBEkDH
This is summer, not spring. He was definitely behind Lanning in the spring game. Things change over the course of 4 months. I still think Rohach may be the starter and Rhoads just doesn't want to tell the media right now.

If you listen to the most recent CF podcast, you will hear CW say he believes the ISU staff already knows who they will have starting vs NDSU and they are using this QB competition as a motivational tool.

Regrettably that is likely correct. But is absolutely the wrong way to treat the QB position. That's how you get more out of somebody like a defensive end or a nose tackle, not the guy who should be the team leader. Confidence and respect from teammates are hugely important at QB, you don't get that by telling them they have a tenuous grasp on the job. Instead we seem to be heading towards another year of someone looking over their shoulder and being terrified of making mistakes.

They need to name their guy and give him a long leash. Whether it is Sam or Grant once they are named the stater they should stay the starter barring injury.

Regardless of who is chosen as the starting QB, here's to hoping that we aren't calling for the backup on CF after the first game.

So if Grant or Sam is named the starter and totally stinks up the place and doesn't execute, we stay with him no matter what?

I don't believe in pulling the QB for making a mistake, but if the guy totally sucks you can't just sit back and not give the other guy at least a shot at some time in the game.

Mine and thousands of other eyes. He might not have been behind him, but he didn't look ahead of him. Lanning was the second QB to come into the spring game that played with the 2's right away. All QB's looked awful in the spring game though. Not sure if Sam was nursing an injury, but if he had I wouldn't have thought he would play.

I was there. There was a scrimmage the week before. Maybe Sam did the best and they wanted to take a long look at Lanning as Mangino already knew what he had in Grant and Sam from game film. Also could be tactical to keep NDSU from knowing who to plan for. CPR said during press conference that Sam could very well be with the 1s next practice and the QBs were on a natural rotation. Ie don't read too much into how much each guy played in the spring game.

That was the rotation that they were on with the QB's. Rhoads stated that and said not to read too much into it......which you did.

IMO, it is coming down to either Grant or Sam. I consider them to be viable QB's that we can win with. Contrast that with 2003 season. We were awful.

How would you like to choose from these QB's.

i believe with MM's system it is more about quick reads and getting the ball out quickly to let the playmakers make the plays...whover can do that gets my vote as well

Didn't help that everyone looked equally as awful and nobody stood out.

C'mon. None of those candidates would even dress today as a QB. They were really bad. Lanning is light years ahead of any of them. A 10 yard pass was reason to celebrate.

I never mentioned the OB's from 2003. Yes, I realize that. Those QB's were the worst core I remember since I started following Iowa State. Still is completely irrelevant to anything I was talking about. Also, that 2003 team was never competitive after the 2nd week of September. I would hope we are a little better.

We are a lot better. And I posted that for those who are still yearning for the DMAC years and say that Rhoads should be fired. They have really bad memories........of really bad memories.

I say we put in the backup right now. Couldn't be any worse. :jimlad:

But in all seriousness, I'm more concerned with playing an injured QB when we have another equally viable option. Hope that does not happen again this year.

IIRC I believe CPR came out and said Rohach wasn't ready right away which is why Sam played hurt initially.
