I'm not a vegan, only a pescetarian, so I don't know if I can answer this question to your liking, but ultimately, it's just a name. People are put off by the word "meat" they're put off by the process of how it's made.
And some of that food isn't bad. Smart Life makes a pretty good loose meat turkey and ham made out of soy protein, and companies like MorningStar make good hamburger, hot dog and chicken patty substitutes. Obviously they're not as good as the real thing, but for someone that doesn't eat meat and has the craving for something like that, they're a serviceable replacement. And, they're generally much lower in calories and fat.
And I don't know anyone that opposes the idea of faux fur, unless you count the crazy PETA people.
I've been to a few vegan places and it's pretty amazing how good it can be. I would seriously consider going veggie if I could cook like that.
An odd thing. I was eating the "burger" and it was dynamite, but when I tasted each individual part of the burger....whew....bad bad bad
