Why do some people feel the need to cheat in a family game of cards, even after three different players have given subtle hints to the person after three consecutive rounds that they are aware of the cheating? Why do they escalate it to the point that they are finally directly called out on it? It spoils the game for all involved.

Grrrrr. If you have to cheat to win, it isn't really winning.

I haven't worked a full workweek in like 5 weeks. This week is going to suck.

Maybe I will take Friday off, haha.

Tell them what my grandfather told me: If I ever catch you cheating at cards, I will never trust you again. Because a friendly game of cards isn't important. And if you'll lie, cheat and steal from me when it's not important, you sure as hell will when it is important.

Good response. I taught my kids much the same thing. It's difficult when the person in question is your mid-thirties SIL of about 4 years.

Ahh...the in-laws...I was thinking direct lineage or your relatives...in-laws are a different animal. I dealt with that thru the nephews. My nephews are just like my BIL...winning is everything, they pout when they lose, etc. So I told them all the same things that applied to their father when he was there. I don't play with cheaters, I don't play with whiners, etc. And, sometimes I just don't play with him. Generally when he pulls one of his cutthroat/backstab moves it's the end of the game for me.
