Seth Davis on DP show

Re: Seth Greenberg on DP show

Rumor is Fred already took an NBA job and the entire assistant coaching staff with him. Pollard will coach the team tonight.

Re: Seth Greenberg on DP show

Are you close with the Hoibergs? You must be, so please give us the dish.

Because, now that he's gotten a taste of what is possible here, it would make perfect sense to go coach the t wolves without Kevin Love. Love has already told people he wants out, and Rubio isn't anyone to build around.

I would never claim that he'll stay forever. But this isn't a mercenary coach looking for his next opportunity. This is the only coaching job he ever wanted.
That would be spot on!! if the T-wolves were the only team in the league or maybe the only team he has connections with.

Re: Seth Greenberg on DP show

I wonder what level of control or favorable front office Fred would need to really scratch that competitive itch. Would a franchise like Minnesota that's always going to struggle to get the pieces needed to contend actually going to be that attractive? What about a massive re-build job like Stevens has in Boston?

Paul Allen said on KXNO that Fred wanted out of MN. The GM, or President, or someone was beginning to feel threatened by Fred and the environment wasn't very good. Allen said that Fred's not going back to MN with that guy in place.

Re: Seth Greenberg on DP show

It seems like every single year Tom Izzo is rumored to be the next coach at the Detroit Pistons. Has he done it yet? I know it's not the same story (I believe he went to Northern Michigan, not MSU) but it's fairly similar. This is the job Fred begged for and he immediately succeeded in it. I'm not worried about him going anywhere. Could he? Sure, just like Izzo COULD coach the Pistons. But I'm not going to sit here and expect it will happen. I will be shocked at any time if he leaves. I won't be disappointed in him, as he's already vastly improved our situation dramatically, but I will be saddened and shocked, because I don't see it ever happening.

Everyone needs to make sure they are soaking in what we are experiencing now. I frequently find myself always looking forward to something in life (sports and other items) and forget to treasure each moment along the way. Fred coaching ISU is one of those moments to treasure, regardless of how long he is here.
We spend countless hours discussing future recruits and the ever popular future starting line-ups........just enjoy the season!!!

Indiana will not fire Vogel. Thibs at Chicago may leave, but try and sell a Iowa State coach to that fan base. The Knicks will pick someone connected to Jackson.

Those would be the best jobs available to Fred. Detroit doesn't seem his style. Nor does all the standard revolving door jobs that hire and fire coaches yearly.

Again, this is a home town boy made good. He also has seen what he believed to be possible come to fruition.

That was before flip Saunders went back to run the franchise. Problem is NO-ONE wants to play in Minnesota. Adleman is a terrific coach, with a proven track record, and he is floundering there.

Those people are gone. Flip is very close with Fred.

Well put! I know the build up to some sporting events, holidays, etc can sometimes get in the way of just enjoying it.

Re: Seth Greenberg on DP show

Than it is incorrect to say you would not even be a little bit surprised. Good grief indeed.
Don't be a ninny. I have a guess about what he will do, certainly after this year, but I also recognize that my guess is based on limited information. I don't know Fred and I know virtually nothing about dozens of factors that would go into his decision. So I'm not confident in my guess and I can honestly say I won't be surprised if I'm wrong.

Re: Seth Greenberg on DP show

Also, the T-Wolves have Terry Porter on their bench right now as an Asst. and he's paid his dues again for another shot at a head coaching gig.

Re: Seth Greenberg on DP show

The NBA will ALWAYS be there, there's no need to rush it. I can't imagine Fred going to the NBA before he feels like his college coaching career has a nice bow on it (which also means establishing a legacy).

Well that would have been Kahn and company, so they should pretty much be gone. Flip Saunders is running things up there now, and I'd have to think he'd be very open to bringing Fred in. I just don't think, outside of the personal relationships, that's an attractive situation for Fred.

Re: Seth Greenberg on DP show

At the end of the show they go around the room with a "what did you learn" segment and one of the Danette's said that Fred might go to the NBA. This is a perfect example of how this **** starts

Re: Seth Greenberg on DP show

If we can hold on for another five or six years, I think Fred can put together a run that we've never seen. I guess the thing that sticks out to me is how competitive he is. I don't think he leaves here without an Elite 8 or a Final 4. Maybe he would feel satisfied with three Sweet 16's and an Elite 8. I don't know. I just don't think Fred would leave until he's left an indelible mark.

Re: Seth Greenberg on DP show

I take comfort in the fact that Fred has already spent time in the NBA. If he never had that exposure, I could see him wanting to go there, but he knows what it's like there, and I think he's happy at ISU, at least for a while. He loves Ames and Iowa State, and I truly believe he won't leave until he has won a few National Championships and he knows he can leave the program in good hands for continued success. He's said a few times that he doesn't like coaching- "It's nervous when you when, and sucks when you lose". He knows that's he has the best support system around him at ISU, when things don't go as well as he'd like. He'd never have that in the NBA e.g. Tim Floyd.

Apparently Flip is in NY to watch the games this weekend. Close to both Izzo and Fred. Probably means nothing.

I'm a bit torn on the issue. Gut tells me that Fred is peferctly happy (especially when Jamie adds another quarter to half a million a year to that contract in a few weeks). I think he's genuine in wanting to see his kids go to ISU and possibly play for him. He's a great family man by all indications and I don't think he's the sort to pull the kids out of their schools at this time in their lives. Both families in Ames. He's a freaking God here. I know recruiting may take a lot of offseason time, but the NBA season is basically 8 mos versus 5 in college and tons more travel.

If all the kids were in HS, I'd say no way. Maybe in 2-3 years I'd worry when they're grown and gone. But with the twins only being 10 (??), that may put delaying an NBA future too far off to wait til their through school. Only thing that really gives me pause is if there is any sort of rift due to the Bubu situation - not saying there is.

I think he's not leaving. NBA doesn't pay that much more. Especially in a "win now" culture where he could be gone in 2-3 seasons. There's a less than zero chance he's fired from ISU in the next 10, if ever. He has plenty to prove at the college level. I don't believe he has the ego that he "needs to do it at the highest level".

Seth Davis is a tool. I enjoy how little respect the NBA guys on the tournament pregame shows have for him.
