Visiting Hilton for the first time...Suggestions?

I just googled "Iowa State message board" and saw this on there. I scrolled a few posts and you all seemed to know what you were talking about so I figured it was a good group to reach out to and find out some info on what to do on my quick visit to Ames.

The excitement for this game is huge! Hopefully our fans will still be polite to you if you are, but there was a lot of anger after last year

This game is going to be terrific. Yeah, I know you all were a bit angry. I remember reading about the guy with the lovely, immature racial slurs towards Elijah Johnson haha. If anyone wants to be rude, I'll gladly kill them with kindness and they won't know what to do.

I've been to games @ Missouri. As a KU fan, NOTHING could be as intense as dealing with those hillbillies haha.

Whatever you do, resist the urge to start a Rock, Chalk, Jayhawk chant in our arena. We can't guarantee your safety if you pull that nonsense.

I'll apologize in advance. If we are winning, there's 100% chance I'll be doing the Rock Chalk. It's in my blood as a Jayhawk that a Rock Chalk is needed at the end of every win.

Is Hickory Park associated with Hickory House? The only suggestion I've received so far from the only Iowa St person I know was that I should go to Hickory House.

Hickory House used to be in Fort Dodge. They also had ribs, it was just a different atmosphere. It's gone now.

As others said, Hickory Park will be packed. If you are here the whole day, it might be worth going at a non-peak time if you can get in. Otherwise, I'd also suggest Great Plains, it's an Ames institution. There are some amazing off-the-beaten-path places, but HP and GPS&D are sort of the destinations for out-of-towners.

Thanks for stopping by. Kansas is my second favorite team behind ISU by far.

You mention after game drinks. There's a lot of nice places in Ames, but I think you'd be remiss if you didn't take a trip down to Des Moines. It's not Chicago, but it's going to feel a lot more like that than Ames. There's a place I like to go when I'm in the area, a nice little out of the way place, but has a good atmosphere and the feel of a larger city 'secret spot', plus their bartenders all know their stuff, unlike a lot of Ames places where it's "ehh...dump it in a cup, the college kids will drink it."

Check it out, it's called "Big Earl's Goldmine"...kind of a goofy name, I know, but it started from more humble beginnings, but the owner has kept improving it over time.

Well, I was kind of hoping to go somewhere within walking distance of Hilton. Game will likely end around 10:30 or so, so I was looking for some drinks in Ames before heading to the hotel to sleep and drive back to Chicago tuesday morning.

Ha, well luckily I"ve gotten lots of good info and suggestions so far so I'll be able to deal with any upcoming stupidity that might be hiding around the corner.

You should go read some of our older threads and you can see some of it :P But for the most part we're good and there can be a family bond developed with other posters. Lots of support and encouragement for each other.

You ain't seen nothin' yet. We've got levels of stupid we haven't even bothered to tap yet.

Yeah I'm actually SHOCKED that nobody has given me the whole "f-- you, get off our message board. f-- KU". Hell, on the KU message board I write on I've come across WAY bigger a-holes than I have on here with you guys lol

I don't think you will have any problem at Hilton. I think you will find it is a pretty friendly environment for opposing fans. You should tell us what you thought after the game about your trip here. Always interesting to hear opinions from opposing fans experiencing it for the first time.

There isn't a whole lot within walking distance (I'm thinking across the street). The closest is probably Welch Ave
