Source: K.J. Bluford is transferring

Did those guys leave midseason? Totally different.

Him leaving probably has more to do with Fred, than KJ. If Naz, SDW, Edozie or Morris left because of playing time, I can understand your feelings.

Fred's not losing too much sleep over this one, and in all honestly probably helped facilitate it.

Can't wish this guy luck or root for him. You start what you finish. Selfish. Transfer after the season but don't hurt the team that needs you in practice! A chance to be on a great TEAM and he's all ME. Thanks for nothing.

Now if was not entirely his call, then that's different.

After thinking about his situation, I will suggest that he wants a place where he can put up lots of shots, and that he does not appear to care to be on a great team. He showed he did not want to distribute the ball, but shoot instead. He was going to need a further adjustment to blend in on the court. If KJ and Percy were on the court together, how was Ellerman going to get any shots? Thinking Grinnell?

Word is that it may have been academic issues, so that changes everything and makes more sense, though your statement is valid.

If it's academics then wouldn't he first be on academic probation before being forced to leave school? And if it's truly academics, wouldn't enrollment into another school be difficult?

With that said, who would you rather have back? K.J. or DeAndre Phillips :twitcy:

All good questions...guessing that by just getting out (leaving not forced) he saves a 1/2 yr of eligibility. Getting into another school isn't that big an issue because he finished JC I assume and it's not like your gpa transfers anyway. You still go back to ACT scores as an option.
Having said that you still have to be "in good standing" according to the NCAA, so I really don't know.

I don't agree with this post at all. Best of luck to KJ as he seeks out playing time somewhere else.

It's a legit choice a lot of players have to make, get to play or be a benchwarmer on a tourney team. There's nothing wrong with either choice.

I hope it wasn't grades. I believe if a player leaves school while not in good academic standing, it counts against the school APR requirements.

Well I'd also assume it hurts to have a kid on your team that is not in good academic standing, so 6 of one and half a dozen of the other.

Pure speculation at this point. But poor grades prompting him to transfer is plausible...

IAStubborn. I guess at this point I don't know what your point is. All it seems like you are arguing is the difference between an academic residency and a redshirt.

Bluford played a full season in 2011-12. He played a full season in 2012-13. He played a half season(first semester) in 2013-14. He will have to sit out for "academic residency" requirements from Jan 2014-Dec 20, 2014. He will play a half season(second semester) in 2014-15. He will play a full season in 2015-16. So he will play 3 full seasons and 2 half seasons for a total of 4 full seasons. He will sit out two semesters aka one season.

What don't you agree with in what I typed here?

Haven't read thru the whole post but anybody guessing what Fred does with the scholly? My guess is he tries to come up with a juco or transfer point guard if a real good one is still available. At least he's getting a head start with Bluford leaving at mid-season.

Bluford has a max of one year playing time after he leaves. Playing the first semester one year and the second semester the next year counts as 2 years of eligibility. Same as a football player who plays the first 6 games one year and the last 6 games the following year.

I think he's saying this:

11-12: Played full year Juco. Used year of eligibility
12-13: Played full year Juco. Used year of eligibility
13-14: Played 1/2 year ISU. Used FULL year eligibility.
13-14: Must sit second half of season.
14-15: Must sit first half of season.
14-15: Could play second half of season. Would use last year of eligibility.

His other option would be to sit out 2nd half of 13-14 per transfer rules, then redshirt entire 14-15 season. Then he could play the full 15-16 season with his one remaining year of eligibility.

All of this assumes that playing 1/2 of the season constitutes losing a FULL year of eligibility. I have no idea if that's true, but it seems to be what IAStubborn is contending.

I guess if you repeat a lie enough times it's possible people will believe you. . . But it won't give Buford a year and a half more of eligibility. . .

That part is wrong. If Bluford plays second semester next year, that's it for his eligibility. It will be his fourth season playing college basketball. The only way he can play another full year is if he sits out all of next season, assuming he hasn't already used a redshirt year, and plays again in 2015-16.

"You start something, you finish it" is a nice folksy sentiment to teach children, but doesn't fit in with division 1 college athletics. I'm assuming someone has explained his options and he is choosing the one he believes will give him the best opportunity to succeed. He could be completely wrong, but it doesn't much matter.

He doesnt save any eligibility...if he has a redshirt he can still sit out a year and a year to play at end of season which is most he could possibly have. If he doesnt have a RS leaving now is his only option.
