Meeks

The way Rhoads has talked about Seeley, I'd expect him to be starting above Meeks. We shall see.

I think it is going to be hard to keep Meeks off the field, much like Knott.

I agree, that's what kind of puzzles me now. Both started in in positions other than MIKE, so maybe Seeley will end up back at WILL, and Knott will move over to SAM/nickel, which frankly would be a great spot for him, IMO.

Are we even recruiting any JUCOs at linebacker? I'd personally rather develop the young backers now rather than bring in a JUCO.

1. Yes

2. Why? I have a hard time believing that any LBs who aren't able to crack our rotation this year (and some that have cracked it) will be Big 12 average LBs by next season.

I still hope they grab a JUCO LB to push Brackens and Knott/Miller. Maybe even take their spot. I don't have a huge amount of confidence in the LBs being much better if at all next season. DL has to be better though baring injury so maybe that will be the difference. Of course, with a very young secondary next season (No seniors at all), we can't rely on them to be huge run stoppers like Washington and Broomfield.

Agree with everything... except, Washington is a run stopper we can rely on? Eh?

Has Seeley played at all this year? I've been anxious to see him and with injuries and lack of depth I thought he would have played some by now. Granted George never leaves the field, but Miller clearly has struggled. I think Miller has really good physical tools but for some reason he ends up out of position a lot.

1. Who

2. Klein and Knott didn't play a lot as Freshmen if I remember correctly, the next year they were two of the best linebackers in the conference. Don't underestimate Wally's ability to develop talent.

I wonder if he stays there after the offseason. Rhoads mentioned on a call in show that he's up to 260 and his body may have more room for growth. He could end up a d-lineman.
260 tells me he's already as big or bigger than our current DE's (Morrissey/Scott). If he is at all agile though, not to mention fundamentally sound, I want him making up for the disaster that our LB has been this season (not singling anyone out)

1. Recruiting a juco olb that has already visited dejon brown, would be a nice get but is visiting Tennessee later so could be tough

I just hope Meeks can really fly and get into pass coverage.

We have missed Jake and AJK getting INTs.

JUCO's on Defense

Caught the end of Paul Rhoads call in show last night and he mentioned ISU is recruiting JUCO DT, DE, LB and DB's. IMO ISU's defense needs to become much more physical to stop the run. It would be nice to get a JUCO DT, DE(270 lbs) and an OLB(around 235lbs).

IMO next year we can't start both Knott and Brackins at LB if they are gong to weigh in the 215lb range.

Well IMO, either Knott or Brackens (doubt it will be both for nickel/coverage purposes) will put on about 10 or 15 pounds. That would put both of them over 220 and that seems to be plenty fine for a OLB in this conference. But i am hoping we get a JUCO LB to help with depth. I think Darius White is a guy who is overlooked. If his "light" comes on, he has the best physical tools out of any of them. You know what we have, but after a RS year and this coming spring, who knows what Justin Madison, Justin Webster, and Brian Mills will look like.

We need a big JUCO DT and DE (like you said, but at least 260 or more) to help out. I think Mitchell Meyers will be starting next year, and wouldn't be surprised to see him weigh in around 260 (252 now). Coe, Jensen, Irving, Aka, Krick, and Cousins are a good core to hopefully improve with another spring and I have heard Vernell Trent and Garcia have looked good (both have good size too).

DB we might need a safety from the JUCO ranks. I think we have a lot of young talent in the DB groups. Tribune will be great, and surely Lynn or Sam E Richardson will be improved as they are still young. Not to mention the RS players obviously they will have no fear of giving a chance if they are good enough. I still to this day think that Charlie Rogers is a safety next year. He has the size and athleticism and just strikes me as a guy who will make plays. Who gets the other safety spot? Unless a JUCO gets signed then it will be Cotton or Mutcherson. Does anyone know who of the RS players from this year are safeties? Cotton-Moya? Syrie? Other than DL, i think Safety is the toughest position for a Freshman to be put into.

We have a lot of young guys on defense. Like, a lot a lot. I am excited to see how the talent develops and if any of the RS guys are capable of playing next year above the upperclassmen. But to answer the question of JUCO, yes we could use JUCO help at almost all of the positions on Defense.

He can hit like a bullet and he has no neck.

Just thinking out loud.... Most likely won't happen but Brackens was a safety out of high school. Seely, Knott, Meeks at linebackers and Brackens at safety? Highly unlikely, just a thought. I think it will be a mix of Rodgers/Cotton or JUCO guys playing our safeties next season.

Meeks had an offer from Florida State out of high school to play LB. Would be surprised if he didn't find his way on the field next season.

I think Rogers has been very solid this year, I dont think I have see the guy miss a tackle. I would love to have him take over for JW.
