Ikea to Kansas City

thats hard to believe you travel that far for an ikea

I have one walking distance from my apartment here and I just walk over for lunch sometimes, place is a steal

I got an egg timer and some measuring cups when I was there last time. You can always find something.

My wife has driven to the Frisco store 2 different times with friends for a weekend getaway (5 hours from us), and this past July we went to the Orlando store so I could see what the fuss was all about. I can see the draw to the place, (and lunch was really pretty good) but 5 hours for a place is pretty bad. KC we can do in 3-4, so if we are still here in 2014 I am sure we will be making the trip.

We've gotten some decent stuff from the Minneapolis store when my wife and I have been up visiting family, but I can't see driving 4-5 hours to get there and having IKEA be the whole point of the trip.

Just to get ahead of it. No, there is no IKEA coming to Des Moines soon. Unless they change their business model, DM metro is not big enough.

You seem to be a very negative person.

It's pretty much true though. It's not like there is an abundance of cheap hardwood overgrowing Sweden. It's all made of the same cheap materials as Wal-Mart or Target furniture. They just know how to style their showroom better. Appearance makes the entire store.

Is it the world's highest quality furniture? No. But as somebody who is only 3.5 years out of college and thus has an abundance of IKEA and Wal-Mart/Target furniture in their home, the IKEA stuff holds up and looks WAY better than than the cheap-o Target specials.

Exactly. They have a niche market and I give them lots of credit for discovering it. I know the stuff is cheap, but I'm perfectly willing to buy cheap stuff for a few years in lieu of dropping serious coin on higher-quality furniture or going to the trouble of tracking down used stuff.

That said, though, I should not be able to lift my kitchen table with my pinky finger.

places I would rather be than an IKEA.

Lybian Embasy
the Sudan
The West Bank

among others

I just don't understand why someone would spend $100+ on gas to go to one when almost everyone has a Target within 20 miles.

It's true that it is great for items that are more form than function. It makes more sense to pay a premium to get certain items like chairs, couches, tables, bed sets, etc that will quickly show wear if cheaply manufactured. Crate and Barrel hits the bang/buck better on those types of items IMO.

I guess most of our IKEA stuff is shelving, except our bedframe which has been pretty nice.
