Williams: A workmanlike win

Impressive that it was the first time we have had back to back no TD allowed games since the mid 60's, and that time it wasn't even in the same season.

Chris, I'm terrified that we didn't show any kind of "killer" instincts on offense last night. Could you help a brother gain a little confidence in our offense's ability to score early and often?

It was nice to enjoy an entire game at Jack Trice with no stress at any time. Beautiful weather, too.

One problem with CW's analysis - Steele Jantz should not get a helmet sticker. You can't say that his stats/game were good with the exception of the turnovers. Jantz has to get this straightened out. Until he does, you can't give him any kudos.

I would agree, however, that watching all three quarterbacks made it clear that Jantz is the best.

I am so impressed with the depth on this team - RB seems loaded, Richardson looked good as QB3, cornerback has 5 solid players, LB is very deep O line has great depth, WR has solid depth. No just stop the turnovers and this season could be very special.

I agree that if we could eliminate the turnovers and stupid penalties, this team has the potential to be pretty special. I'm just not sure I can envision a Steele Jantz that doesn't turn the ball over... he's just a gunslinger and I'm not sure you can completely remove that from him and still have him be effective?

Also... I'm REALLY excited about the depth on this team too, but I'm not sure the LB depth is as good as you say it is?

Who will start at LB next year? George for sure, and then it's kind of a question mark. Probably Jevohn Miller, but he plays the same LB spot as George right now, correct? I think getting a JUCO LB might be a strong possibility considering we will have a lot of young guys that might not quite be ready yet?

LB's - Knott, Klein, George (jr) - then Broomfield (jr), CJ Morgan (soph), and Miller (soph) - I think they can all play - obviously Knot and Klein can't be replaced, but IMO this is pretty decent depth. Maybe Luke Knott bulks up and moves to LB down the road

Broomfield and Morgan are more of the hybrid type nickel guys that come in on passing downs, and not your every down LB's. They are lacking some of the size you'd like to see from your starting group IMO. But they could very welll be our best and only choices? I just wonder if a Kane Seeley or Darius White will need to step it up and possibly start next year?

From what I can tell; I think the Cyclones play too many players on offense at the skilled positions and they cannot build any type of cohesiveness or rythmn. ISU plays way too many receivers. They should put their best who have earned the positions then give them a blow if they get gassed (especially when in the Jet offense). Playing seven and eight receivers is there any wonder they cannot build a rythmn. It appears to me that "THE OFFENSE BOGS DOWN WHEN AARON HORNE IS NOT IN THE GAME" (objectively review all three games to see). Go with Josh Lenz, Horne, and Chris Young, spell them with Jarvis West and Jerome Tiller and just let them play. Build up a big lead then work on your depth with the younger talent.

Believe me; come Big 12 time when we start facing offenses that fight back we are going to need our best players firing on all cylinders.

Good point on Broomfield and Morgan - we will need to have more size for next year - these guys compliment Knott and Klein on this team, but next year to expect them to step up as starters is probably asking too much.

My Cyclone Reaction co-host Jack Whitver is a BIG C.J. Morgan guy. We were talking about that last night. The guy just looks the part.

What "gunslinger" throw did Jantz make last night?

Ive counted one through 3 games

That's fair. Very fair. But it's hard to not give the guy one after going 19-for-26 with a 3 to 1 TD/INT radio and most importantly, a win. That's what was going through my mind.

I've been surprised how negative some people are about the win. WIU stuck to their game plan and played pretty conservatively. They ran the ball 38 times and only passed 19 times even though they were behind the whole game. They won the time of possession and had no turnovers.

Obviously, you'd like to see the Iowa Stat offense have less turnovers, but they also never really had a short field (except for a punt return) and also the game had fewer possessions and plays because WIU was content to run the clock.

Yeah, CJ Morgan could definately get big enough to play LB. He's listed right now at 6'3" and 212 lbs, so for him to get up to 6'3" and 225 wouldn't be all that difficult. In comparison, Broomfield is listed at 6'0" and 196 lbs. 196 lbs is just not Big 12 LB size... heck it's barely HS size LB.

Seeley and Darius White are already 221 lbs and 233 lbs respectively as freshmen. And I still think Luke Knott is going to someday be a LB for us. He's 6'0" and 205 lbs right now, but he could get up to 225 lbs I would think too? Unless the coaches just think he's going to be our next stud safety and keep him there?

Workmanlikeisn’t going to cut it in league play. All eleven guys on the defense seem to be bringing in it every serieswhile the offense looks great one series and poor the next. Our defense will keep us in league games butthe offense is going to have to step it up in order to win any of thosegames. We aren’t going to be able to getaway with 9 to 6 wins in the Big 12. The rate of turnovers (all games) and thedumb penalties in game three aren’t going to get us to the 5-0 and 6-0 thatfolks are discussing in the ranking thread.
