*** Official ISU vs. Western Illinois Postgame Thread ***

It seems to me that we were testing different things out throughout the game instead of just trying to pile up the points, which we really could have. I wanted to see a big blowout just like everyone else, but I think Rhoads chose not to and tried to work on things we need to improve upon.

Would have really liked to have blown them out in the first half that we never saw the starters in the second.

JB looked bad from where I was at. Ran the zone read great but his passing reads and accuracy were bad. Wish we could have seen Richardson throw it a couple times but I guess that late in the game and up so much, Rhoads probably is more concerned with ending the game and not running up the score. I think next year the QB battle is going to be Rohach and Richardson.

Besides that one messed up route play, Jantz threw the ball well. Missed a wide open WR in the 1st half when he was scrambling one time. WR was about 5 yards from the endzone and Steele just ran it out, he needs to find those guys when coverage breaks down. I think he missed a wide open Horne last week too.

A little nervous that we didn't have Johnson or Woody run it more. Coaches must have been quite confident that the RBs are ready to go since our 3 main guys only had 11 total rushes.

Loved what our WRs did. Especially guys like Tiller.

Defense looked stout but was bummed to see no TOs.

Where was Josh Lenz tonight. I think I saw him have 1 catch but apart from that he was barely on the field

Anyone know if he is carrying a Knock??

He didn't see that much time. He may be a bit beat up. We saw a lot of Tiller instead.

still lots of things to get better at on offense, but 2 years in a row, 3-0 in non-con. A great shot at being 4-0 overall before October. The potential is there. Like Bruns said on the radio, "the next team that comes in here, will look totally different than Western Illinois".

I wouldn't be too critical of JB's performance tonight. You're talking about a QB who has started 6 games and is the only QB on our roster with Big 12 wins as we start conference play. You asked him to come in a game that was out of hand and take meaningless snaps. Thats diffucult to mentally get up for when youve led this team like he did last year. Granted he needed to play but this offense has been average for 3 weeks now. There has been plenty opportunity to get him some meaningful snaps when it mattered. He and Nealy ran the zone read well but every time he dropped back to pass he was running for his life because the RT was getting his *** blown off the line. They didn't call any screens to get him going. Everything was from the pocket and he didn't have time to even set his feet.

I thought Steele played ok. The turnovers are going to kill us if he keeps averaging 2 per game. I was very disappointed that Shontrelle only had 4 carries. This was a great week to get the run game going. Conference play starts in 2 weeks. That's when the rubber will meet the road and we truly get to see what this team is made of. especially the offense.

We got it going. We had 250+ on the ground. Pretty good day running IMO.

After tonight, I'm worried that Barnett isn't practicing hard and won't be there when we need him.

Definitely noticed this. JB didn't look great, but i think the impression was probably worse than reality as he was being given zero time to do anything but run away.

That's true but more of the yards came from the 2's and 3's after the game was out of hand. Nealy had just as many yards in 3 series with JB as James White. James, Trelle, Woody had 11 carries combined for 84 (58 on one play) yards. So, 10 carries for 26 the rest of the way for the big 3. Thats not getting it going in my book. Nealy had 9 carries for 70 yards. He's the 4th RB.

Wow, I'm on the 4th page in this thread and gotta wonder...where's the love for Chris Young???
7 rec for 86 yards and 2 Tds - that is a great stat line.

Also SO to the D and only allowing 10 completed passes (and that was for the game, so 2nd string for 1+ quarters) for a mere 75 yards!!

Also, very impressed with the special teams all around tonight - Horne with 2 punt returns for a total of 64 yards (plus a TD called back on a penalty) - Arceo was 100% on his kicks and put a couple kickoffs in the endzone - and KVK with 4 punts avg 47.3 yards/punt.

Chris Young had a great game and really gives our offense a spark when he gets the ball in his hands.

Horne's TD on the punt return should not have been called back, did not see a hold on the replay. He also had a solid game.

KVK is a deadly sniper. A true defensive weapon.

Well, to be far, Barnett wasn't throwing to our best receivers, and didn't have our starting offensive line. He had to roll out of the pocket a lot and he might be really good throwing on the run someday. Bundrage needs to learn how to catch.

I don't think young played that much after halftime I could be wrong though.

While watching alabama violate arkansas, I kept thinking "I'm so glad western illinois is coming to ames and not these guys". Great game to work things out.. Got a win, and no serious injuries that I saw. Pretty good day.
