Looks like they are finally going to reconstruct the Iowa State Center courtyard, long overdue imo. Anyways here are some plans i stumbled upon, looks like they are going to be taking out most of the elevated walkways (probably a good idea due to reconstruction costs and future maintenance costs.

This looks so much better. I have always hated the elevated walkway in the middle of the plaza, looks so dumb...

From what I know, nothing is set in stone but some additional ideas include lowering the now-raised Center Street and eliminating the pedestrian tunnels under the street as well.

The main entrance to CY Stephens auditorium may also be moved from the north side to the southeast corner, where the "secondary" entrance currently is.

They would also no longer allow tailgaters to park on the courtyard in the middle of Stephens/Scheman/Hilton for football games.

Interesting I hadn't heard this, just glad they are going to be redoing the stairs and walkways to Hilton as they were starting to look a bit janky.

I think moving the main entrance to the southeast corner of CY Stephens would be a mistake. Not near the space as there is on the north side.

Yea doesn't make much sense, hopefully they're not still considering it since it doesn't seem to be in the proposed plan

TIL

C and Y in CY Stephens spell Cy...

I never made the connection because I say C followed by saying Y.

I spent 4 weeks in that building for various all state music functions and never realized.

...carry on!

Something must be wrong with me...I have no idea what they're doing to improve things other than adding ADA-compliant railings. What am I missing?

The rationale behind this is that the SE entrance of CY Stephens is currently much more utilized than the north entrance anyway because people park in the large lot south of Stephens and east of the Alumni Center. The SE entrance would be renovated and enlarged to make it a true "main entrance." Again this is in the planning stages as far as I know and nothing is set in stone.

No. They need to keep the elevated walkways. The next step is to add a monorail!!

Demolishing most of the walkways, repairing stairs, repairing sidewalk and remaining walkways, landscaping, planting trees, and making some changes to the parking. I think this will improve the look of the area quite a bit actually.

They are getting rid of some of the pointless raised walkways that go around the Hilton/CY Stevens/Scheman area. They'll keep the one between CY and Hilton that goes along Scheman, but most all the others will be gone. That one that is left will be made ADA-compliant.

Thanks; I couldn't tell any of that from the 4 slides. Rep to you both!

I agree that it will make it look pretty nice, but I think I'll always have a fondness for the raised walkways. They're one of the few things I remember from even my first basketball games as a kid, I have a great family photo on one of them from graduation, they look cool all full of people waiting to get into Hilton, etc. I always thought they looked like a multiplayer level in Goldeneye007 for N64, too; I used to think about how cool it would be to play paintball in that area around Hilton and Scheman. They give the area a quirky look, but I'm looking forward to the new look, too.

Yea I agree they were kind of cool and I sort of associated ISU basketball and Hilton with them when I was younger as well, but i guess if they're not going to spend the money to keep them kept up then I would rather they tear them down instead having them the way they look now.
