The one thing I like about how to cross now (police directs traffic) is when you can finally cross, everyone gets excited and high fives the pedestrians going the other direction. But I can part with this if a bridge was somehow in the works.Michigan State did something like that with railroad lines that go on the south side of campus. Wish they'd have done something like that south of Jack Trice for pedestrians, as well as spruce up the railroad overpass on Stange Road by Frederiksen Ct.

Some updates on this project.
Here is a link to a presentation with three options: http://www.fpm.iastate.edu/planning/masterplan/isc_courtyard_2012-08-20_Public Meeting.pdf
Scroll all the way to the last page to see the three options next to one another.
Not all three options are "set in stone", and elements from each can be combined. For example the diagonal pedestrian walkway from Option #1 can be added to either of the other two options for the final design.
I am a fan of Option #3 with the large diagonal pedestrian walkway from the corner of Beach and Lincoln added in.
From what I know, nothing is set in stone but some additional ideas include lowering the now-raised Center Street and eliminating the pedestrian tunnels under the street as well.
The main entrance to CY Stephens auditorium may also be moved from the north side to the southeast corner, where the "secondary" entrance currently is.
They would also no longer allow tailgaters to park on the courtyard in the middle of Stephens/Scheman/Hilton for football games.
